Newly diagnosed

My daughter is nearly 12 and has been diagnosed with possible juvenile epilepsy. Her father was diagnosed with the same when he was an adult. He had partial seizures (extremties) most of his childhood. However he lived in a small country town and the doctor just told him he was nervous. Once he joined the Navy he ended up having a grand mal seizure and a diagnosis was given. He was told he would grow out of it by the time he was 21, but he is now 38 and still has them. he is currently on Dizalporex. Apparently my daughter just started having small episodic partial seizures, however she didn't say anything to me. I noticed it myself when I was watching her hold a calculator and her arm suddenly spasmed. When I asked her what happened, she just brushed it off as one of her "flinches". After talking to her more, I realized that she has these quite often, but didn't think anything of them. I think she may also have absence episodes because I find her sitting and just staring quite often. I took her to our pediatrician who immediately referred us to a pediatric neurologist. I work in an Operating Room myself, including with several neurosurgeons and I am familiar with the surgical treatment of epilepsy, however I know nothing about these beginning stages and the different types. So I came her for information and support.

My 10 year old was also newley diagnosed with Epilepsy. She has abscense seizures. She had them for years and I never thought of it as being epilepsy but thought she was a day dreamer. My mother has had grand-mals so thats what i thought epilepsy was. This is a great site to determine and learn types. As my daugter hit puberty recently the abscense stares turned into herd jerks and shakes for 5 to 10 seconds. good luck in finding the information you need.

I always said she liked to day dream as well. She is just really starting to hit puberty so I wonder if this is why it is starting to manifest itself more now.

Hi MissusLewis.. I had epilepsy since I was three (simple and complex partials) & after decades of meds (that did no good) I had surgery last January. Absence seizures are general = the enitire brain is effected so surgery isn't likely an option. However, absence seizures are one of the most commonly outgrown seizures. http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_absence.html. www.epilepsy.com is an excellent site (run by physicians) so the information you'll read there will be accurate. I highly recommend you check it out; for, as you likely know, the more information we know on the subject the less intimidated we'll be by epilepsy. Take care & wish you the best.. ~sol
