New diagnosis- bcects/bre

Fri, 01/04/2019 - 00:12
First timer - 8 yr old daughter with BCECTS (aka BRE - benign rolandic). Just diagnosed and we have some practical parenting questions. Not sure where to post them to best get answers. one of them is - how closely do we need to monitor her at night? Currently she is sleeping in our bedroom for past month and we want her to be safe but it certainly is not great for our marriage. Is that necessary? obviously, we don't want to risk anything but there does not seem to be much we are able to do either. Thanks

this is best discussed with your child's neurologist. not all cases are exactly alike and your doc knows your child's case. just diagnosed means you are still absorbing all the details so there should be some way to get a follow up (perhaps with an NP in the office) or via secure email. most parents have to work through getting back to the right balance after the diagnosis (and the right balance differs because there are many types of epilepsy). so while rolandic epilepsies are not usually super concerning, there can be a variety different issues - some are medicated, some aren't, epilepsy isn't static so there are changes that can happen (usually it's self limiting).

ps - if there are cognitive

ps - if there are cognitive or language declines, contact your doc.
