New! 3yr old son with complex partial!

Mon, 09/18/2006 - 12:29
My story as I look back is frightening. My son had a seizure about three and a half weeks ago and it lasted 45 minutes long! It took them three doses of heavy meds to get it to stop. He has now been diagnosed as having Complex partail seizures. He has been on dilantin and now they are starting him on Trileptal. This is all so new to me. I am so afraid to let his sleep in his bed which is upstairs and not be there to help him. He has had two others that we know of so far, one at night and the othe in the morning. It is so hard to know when or if he is having a seizure! Can anyone offer any similarities? and or experiences? Thanks so much!

Hi.. I've had Simple and (mostly) Complex Partial seizures for a very, very, long time. (Since I was age three) The main difference between the two types is that complex seizures affect the memory; so, if I was alone and seated or lying down, I'd have no idea a seizure even occurred. And, that is typical. Complex Partials: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_complexpartial.html When most people think of seizures, they think of the Tonic Clonic convulsions conveyed in the movies. Not only are most epileptics not Tonic Clonic, there are more than 40 types of seizures. Some friendly advice would be to read the site www.epilepsy.com; try to take your son to a neurologist that is specialized in epiepsy (called an epileptologist); make a diary re: any seizures and the time of day or reactions to meds; and, be sure his meds are given at the same times each day. I use a med container and have one by my bed (AM dose) and one in the kitchen (PM dose) The bonus that exists now, that wasn't around when I was a child, is that surgery is now commonly performed for partial seizures. IMPORTANT: Despite the fact that what you see outwardly isn't as dramatic as some seizures; I assure you, the emotional effect on the person with Complex Partials is no different. So, the best thing a parent can do is to show thier child they love them no matter what, and never to let their child see that the seizures are worrying them. ~sol

Thank you so much for all of your help. We are trying to understand what he is going through and hearing about others experiances help with that. We are certainly letting him know how much we love him. We are also trying not to hover over him and treat him like any other child. NORMAL. I really like the info on epilepsy.com. Thank you for that. Suzanne
