Need help getting 2 yr old to take Zonegran

Wed, 08/30/2006 - 23:09
Hi, My 2 yr old son was prescribed Zonegran, which apparently only comes in capsule form. I've tried opening them and mixing the powder in foods and drinks, but he won't touch anything we've mixed it in. Swallowing the caps whole is not an option for him and the powder is very bitter and hard to camouflage. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can get the med into him? The neurologist has been less than helpful on this issue. Thanks! Nicole

Hello Nicole I once had to give my 2 year old daughter bitter tablets. We powdered them. Tried everything. Only things that worked, was either to mix it into a small tub of smooth yoghurt, which she loved, or mix them with a sweet powder. Like powdered sugar or sherbet. In my country you get a pill, combi-forte, wich is a probiotica. We sometimes mixed it with that one. Because it's so sweet and fine. Then she licked it from her hand, very happily. The worst way to get it in, that worked, was to mix it with a teaspoon of water, put a towel around her body, pinning her arms, and force it into her mouth, blowing onto her face to make her swollow. It was horrible! I hope you can get it into him. Soon he'll start to swollow pills, then you can relax. Good luck, and take care, Essie (mom to Nian(5), who has epilepsy)

My daughter takes Topomax at night. It is a sprinkle tablet so you open it up and pour the contents out. It also is very bitter. I always put it in applesauce but I don't mix it. I put it toward the back of the spoon so the first taste is sweet and the med sort of soaks in the applesauce. For whatever reason, it is rare that she actually get the taste of the meds- it has happened only a few times. When I tried icecream or yogurt, she always gets the bitter taste. I hope this helps and good luck.

HI Nicole! I had to give my 2 year old daughter Zonegran and it was not pleasant either. I hope that you find a solution that works for you. We would do the ice cream and applesauce thing. Sometimes she would eat it fine and others she would not touch it. Sometimes we would use bannanas we would cut it up in secction and give her a bite then we would take the pill and pour the powder on the last two bites and she would eat them. It was hard to try and trick her but it she needed her medicine... Finally about 3 months into it I called her Nuero and said this is not working and we need to change. And he agreed because he was afraid she was not getting the right dose, and I am sure that she was not getting it all. Good luck and know that I am giving you a great big hug it is hard enough sometimes without added stress of getting the child to take the medicine. I hope that your little one is doing well and if it does not work out on this medicine it is okay know you tried and there is other medicine that will help. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions Emily Klair's mom.....Kari
