Learning disabilities

Hi all! Emma-Leigh just turned 3 back in July and I am having such a hard time potty training her. She does not know how to pull down her underwear and she consistantly pees in her panties. I am losing patience now and do not know whether to put the pull ups back on her and wait till she is ready or to continue with this puppy stage of peeing everywhere. The doctor told me that she will have learning difficulties and may have to be placed in a special school. It is now that I see her learning disabilities. She doesn't understand. She has peed in the potty 4 times but will only pee if I put her there. She will not go on her own and two minutes later she pees on the floor! Emma is also on the list for speech therepy. I understand her language but no one else knows what she is saying LOL! Please help me somebody! I am losing my patience and have no idea what to do! :(

I can not beleive this..We are living the same life..Emily Klair is in the school system's Special Ed. program and she receives therapy and we too are very frustrated over the potty training thing my girl will be 4 in Dec. and let me tell you we are no where close to being potty trained. I am sure it will be different for you all. Emily Klair has a sensory intergration disorder and was tested for Autism, no autism but what she has is very much like it. She can not stand loud noises, clothes, certain pitches with peoples voices, and can not cope well in new places and enivorments. It has been a real struggle since we first got her tested right after she turned 2. She goes to a mothers day out program at our church two days a week and when the teachers started noticing and commenting on the same concerns we had we took her to the Dr.to discuss our concerns and we did not like what he had to say he was sure that it was autism and that she had a learning disability...but she is smart as a whip and loves school and with therapy (we are on a brushing and joint conpression routine every 2 hours and you would not believe the difference it has made) Iknow that she will get potty trained someday. I hated the thought of a label of special ed on my daughter but then I realized the sooner I get her help the sooner that label WILL come off. We love our children no matter what and we are trying to give them the best and most normal life they can have. I know this probably did not help you any but know that I feel your pain and I hope that it will get easier. Give Emma a hug and know that you are not alone in this battle.

Wow! We are leading the same paths! Emma is smart when figuring things out for herself (like opening a gate etc..) but when she is being told instructions she gets confused and overwhelmed. I am worried because she is still on the list for speech therepy. She is finally going to see a psychiatrist about her eating problem (she seems to be afraid of food, the way it looks, the colours, shapes, textures etc). All Emma wants to do is drink and avoid food all together. If she is eating (she only eats toast on a good day), and you talk to her to distract her, she will stop eating. I can tell when she is not well because she will not eat anything at all and usually that is the time her Epilepsy is out of control again or she is physically sick. She is so sensitive and hates change. Everytime we visit someone she wants to go home! The only place she likes to be is at home or in the minivan! We even bought bunkbeds because I just had another baby in January so we wanted to put her in the room with her older sister. She hates it and keeps going back to her old room! The baby is stil in my room because I am waiting till Emma feels comfortable enough to stay in her new room. Everything is frustrating me lately. I am really running out of patience and I am sad. Emma seems to be growing up in some areas but not all of them. She seems to act like she is two instead of three! She only started walking when she was two so it seems like she is a year behind with everything. It is like I have two babies instead of one so maybe that is why I am so frustrated! I will keep trying to teach her and will discuss this with her neuro next time I see her (which is in Nov!!!!!Arrggghhh!). It is like she has some symptoms of Autism but does not have the antisocial aspect of Autism. She sees the world differently from us. I just have to learn how she sees it so I can help her! Let me know how your daughter is doing!
