Focal Seizure in Foot?

Mon, 02/12/2018 - 19:38
Hi, Last year my daughter (age 10) was diagnosed with epilepsy after having about 6 seizures in 6 weeks. It all happened very fast and after we found the right meds (Carbamazapine) she has not had any grand mal seizures in 6 months. Once she was diagnosed we realized that these things she was having that she called a "foot spaz" were likely focal seizures and they had been happening for a year or two before the grand mal's made an appearance. She only had them about 1/month and they were very short (5-20 seconds) and she described the foot spaz as " the muscles contracted and/or going limp". They didn't interfere with her life much and she does a lot of gymnastics, so we assumed it was a tight muscle etc. She continues to get these focal seizures in her one foot and they are almost a daily experience. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience w focal seizures? Sometimes he foot flexes up and locks and then does limp. Other times it just goes limp immediately. I'm also concerned that the meds are not helping. We raised her dose recently and it does not appear to have helped. I also wonder how much anxiety plays into this? She claims to get them sometimes when she hits that foot. Would once get a focal seizure upon impact? So many questions and despite clear EEG's and MRI, we haven't got to the bottom of this. Any info or shared experiences would be so helpful. Thank you!

Did you tell the neurologist

Did you tell the neurologist about her foot spazs?? If not then you do need to tell them about the spazs. Those do sound like seizures that are focal/ My seizures started as focal seizures which affected my right hand only. It would go numb and it was back to normal a few seconds later. Later my right arm would start to rise up. I ignored them thinking it was because I overworked myself since I had been digging the garden. Then I had the grand mal about a year after those had started. My diagnosis was d Mal,Petite Mal and Focal Motor Epilepsy. If she is having those today but hasn't had another larger or stronger seizure then the medication is stopping those but the dosage may need to be adjusted so it can stop these seizures too. Understand that is she has had focal seizures like you posted and had a generalized seizure she can have other seizures so do research the different types of seizures.I hope this helpsJoe

Hi Joe,Thanks so much for

Hi Joe,Thanks so much for your reply.  Yes, we did tell the neurologist about the issues in her foot and they also thought it was focal seizures.  Since her dose was raised we haven't seen any big results.  We see the neurologist again in April so perhaps they will adjust the meds again.Did you manage to get your seizures under control?  Thank you for sharing your story.

Hi, I've been getting these for the past two years now and I was prescribed the same meds as well as kepra. Has there been an update for your daughter?
