Do seizures cause pain?

Thu, 06/08/2006 - 17:29
Hi I am the mother of a 5 1/2 year old who is progressively getting worse. His name is Danny. He has many types of seizures. He has at least 10 notable seizures a day and probably many more. he often requires interventions such as oxygen, suctioning, extra clonopin or diastat. he is on several medications clonopin, keppra, felbatol, phenobarb, and vigabitrin and several others for gi issues. Danny has tried all the other meds to no avail. We recently were told that there are only options left are to do a surgery that splits the 2 hemispheres or to do nothing. We feel this child is in pain and requires more sedation to be comfortable. The neurologist says that seizures are not painful. Danny is currently functioning at a 0-3 month level. He did progress when he was a baby. He did sit, stand and smile all of that is now gone. I am wondering do seizures cause pain? I think they do.

Hello, I know this post is very old but de ided to write my experience for others seeking answers like me. My son is 25 yrs old, he started having epilepsy 6 most ago out of nowhere, No head trauma. Illness, drugs or alcohol. He was a city bus driver and YES I can tell you that my son stated EVERYTIME he had a episode, 6 so far from Oct to present May 2019, that EVERY episode has been the worse pain he experienced in his life, and he was a boxer. He said that it starts in his neck and it stiffens up and his eyes rolled back and when is the next starts turning as if he was going in a backbend position if you try to hold him his neck and torso starts turning right if you try to hold him that way his neck and torso starts turning left he says he feels like he has a charlie horse throughout his whole body * 10 and that his Jaws lock and it feels like Steel his dad has said he sees the muscles and they are so tight so we have to call an ambulance because sometime it affects his breathing he is very conscious of everything that is going on he says he hears us he just cannot speak and after the episode that has lasted no more than five minutes his body is still sore because of the muscles that were stiffened and that constrict it I understand neurologist say normally you do not have pain at seizures but I can testify that my son has to the point it causes anxiety when he feels a aura because he knows the pain that may be coming if he has an actual episode I took my son off of Keppra started at 500 mg and went to 7:50 then went to 1000 I took him off of Keppra because it was starting to have suicidal thoughts and with the pain he has been experiencing he has contemplated that he was recently actually today change to Lamictal 25 mg twice a day and the neurologist said to watch out for the rash because if he has one contact her immediately they may have to change to something else but I did want to say that just because one person does not feel pain that doesn't mean that everyone does not because my son can testify that he has been one of the worst feelings he felt in his life so he is also on valium and I pray this new medicine works

Try using CBD's (Hemp Oil) ..

Try using CBD's (Hemp Oil) ... Look up the research ... it's extensive! It's 100% legal in all states, and has NO adverse effects! All natural. A sister to Cannabis, but NO high at all. 2-4 drops under tongue or in food or drink per day to start; should help. Some people need more. I've found Hemp Meds PX to be the most reliable source.
