Developmental Delays????

Tue, 06/20/2006 - 20:56
My four year old has had developmental delays and we think it is associated with her various types of seizures. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Is there hope she may catch up? I know it could have a lot to do with the medication but she was delayed before she began any medication so I wonder if it has anything to do with the seizures. Is this possible? She is getting therapy now which should help. She has been on so many different meds from dilantin to phenobarbitol to trileptal to topomax, to lamictal to depakote. The last two currently. Thanks for any info you may have.

Yes the meds can cause problems. Be careful with depakote. here is a link about depakote and side effects. http://www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_depakoteer_side.html take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

my daughter is 5 and is repeating kindergarden because she is behind.two nero's have comformed that it is a combo of seizures and meds.her fine motor skills were also behind but since we have raised her trileptal it has improved greatly.we also had her start making models and that seems to have also helped.she can now paint the smallest areas and does better than most her age.this has been great for her comfidence.

My son who is now 4 was 3 1/2 when he was diagnosed and had a vocabulary of about 10 words. Since being on trileptol, and participating in the PPCD program in our school district, he can communicate virtually any point he needs to get across. There are still some minor limitations, but the improvement is incredible. His coordination also vastly improved, however the trileptol tends to make him a very mean spirited child as the doses continue to climb.
