Delaying vaccines if doctor suspects seizures ?

Sun, 10/01/2017 - 04:26
Hello Our son is 21/2 yr old. We gave him all his vaccines but wanted to delay MMR and ChickenPox. Now we want to get him into Day Care but they need all the vaccines. With new CA law, philiosphical\religious exemptions have been removed. - He lately started showing speech issues where neurologist suspects seizures and has requested EEG. Is it still ok to give him these shots OR the shots can worse his seizures ? - Worst case if we decide to give him these vaccines, can we take any precautions to reduce the risk level like gap between 2 vaccines etc ?. Would it help if we delay more ? Thanks Pete

you will have to speak with

you will have to speak with your neurologist to find out if there’s any support for a medical exemption. odds are the doc will reassure you that there is no additional risk. while many concerning syndromes start around a time when vaccinations are given, that’s because there are many vaccinations given not because the vaccinations caused the seizures. there are neurological issues for a tiny number of people who get vaccinations but no tests to know who would be affected by them. the actual disease risks far outweigh the tiny chance of problems from vaccinations for most people.note that kids with epilepsy get vaccinated unless there is some other reason not to do so.

The vaccinations will not

The vaccinations will not cause seizures (generally), but the fever that usually accompanies the vaccinations can.  I usually sweat bullets when my 8 year old gets his annual flu shot.  I start him on children's Tylenol the day after and keep giving it to him for a week after.

starting a day after would

starting a day after would have been too late for the one child of mine that had a febrile seizure or other minor but still adverse reactions (dtp reaction before dtap made me very concerned as did hpv and flu shots same day for another kid) so I give ibuprofen for a day, starting right after we leave the office.but any illness that causes a fever can trigger seizures for my kid with epilepsy, the seizures often precede the fever.
