I am not sure it is the drugs. I do know they can hinder speech sometimes. My daughter will be three in July and can hardly talk. She tries to mimic a sentence but I have no idea what she is saying and I am her mother! It can be very frustrating for both of us at times. They told me she would have speech delays due to the kind of epilepsy she has and where it is. This is why they want to control her seizures, so she can concentrate better and learn how to speak properly. Do not worry, you are not alone here! Good luck :)

You definitely should do a speech evaluation. Often there are free programs through your state. You should try to contact your school district and they may be able to give you information as to how to start the process. Has your doctor indicated he/she believes the speech issues are related to his epilepsy? Children, independant of other conditions, often have speech issues. Early intervention is so important with speech issues. You really should start first by asking your doctor, based on the type of epilepsy, whether he believes there is a connection. This kind of info. would be very important to the speech therapist who will do an evaluation on your child. I have been told that the meds can affect processing for children also. How long has your child been on the meds? I am no expert in this area but my son, who does not have epilepsy, has been in speech therapy for 4 years and is doing amazing now. There is definitely help out there to be found. Also, one more question, while your son may not be speaking that much, does he appear to understand everything you say to him/ask him to do? That could help you determine whether he is processing the information around him.
