My 5 year old is going to camp this summer. Any advice or discussions to have with the camp director regarding epilepsy?

How exciting for your little

How exciting for your little one, going to camp! Prior to camp, I would inquire as to what medical personal will be there, ie. a camp nurse, the camp's medical facilities, nearest hospital & etc. Inform the nurse/staff of your child's meds/type of seizures & etc but I am willing to bet everything will be fine. Your child needs to be given the privilege to lead as near a normal life as possible & I commend you in making this decision. Sending your child to camp will be a great experience!! Ginger

Thanks for your kind words. She went to the same camp last summer but at that time we did not have these concerns. It is strange to have to have these new feelings of fear when last summer, my biggest concern was whether or not she would like camp. I have already put a call in but have not talked to the director yet. Thanks again.

Hi, Good to be proactive preparing for this! Being scared is a common feeling for parents. I've been there myself! Take a look at this link for general info. The Epilepsy Foundation also has links for camp info as many of the Foundation affiliates run or support camping experiences for kids with seizures. www.epilepsy.com/info/family_summercamp.html In addition to what staff know and do to handle seizures, see how they handle basic safety issues, promote independence, and what kind of emotional supports available. Hope it works out for everyone! Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist
