Are breakthrough seizures a normal part of epilepsy or is it a sign that the medication is not right? Sheila

I have tried my neuro, the pharm, & no one has gotten back to me with an answer. I have just  recently been prescribed both dilantin and phenytoin to take simultaneously, does this set me up to have breakthrough seizures? Previously I was only taking phenytoin.  I read an article that indicated switching may cause these type of siezures. Communication keeps getting lost between my neuro and his secretary. I have not gotten an answer and am concerned with the likelihood of this happening.

It depends...it is a sign to talk to the neuro and see what he says...There can be many causes and not always the medication dose per say. Is the person sick.Did the person take the dose as perscribed or did they Miss a dose. Did they take an OTC or other med that might have interferred. Have they grown, lost or gained weight that changed that dose requirement these things need to be taken into account as well. Another thing the doctor might think about. Are the break throughs identical to what has been previously seen or is a new type emerging. I am sorry if you are seeing seizures even through the medication. another thing might be that the dose might not be high enough, or even TOO high a dose.... Hang in there!!! G
