Benign Rolandic Seizures

Wed, 03/15/2006 - 21:17
My son is 10 yrs old and was diagnosed with BRE in January. He had 2 seizures, had a neg. MRI. EEG showed BRE. I understand that most outgrow this? Anyone else have it, or did and outgrow it? He is on keppra and has not had a seizure since starting the meds. He keeps asking if he will have to take the meds forever. Thanks, J

My son is 6. He was just diagnosed with BRS.  I'm not sure how long he has been having seizures.  I witnessed one

on June 21, 2009.  He first stared off and then his left cheek twitched. When he came out of it he could not talk

for 10-15 seconds and then his speech was very slurred. ( the whole seizure only lasted 30-40 seconds) but it

felt much longer.  His doctor did a EEG and a MRI.  The MRI has normal but the EEG showed spikes.  His doctor said it

is BRS. He is on a medicine called Lamictal ODT.  Now I'm trying to learn as much about this as I can.  Has anyone

noticed if there child behavior has changed since they are on medication?

my 12 year old son ryan was diagnosed about 2 years ago with rolandic seizures. he showed  symptoms of drooling.  face, tongue, extremities all tingling (like they were asleep). but the strange part was they only happened either in the middle of the night or within the first couple of hours of waking up in the morning. Only lasting about a minute or less. he felt the need to have to sit down and his arms and legs would stiffen up and he would get a blank stare across his face and begin drooling uncontrollably. yes, it scared me to death until i took him to his pediatrician who in turn referred me to an amazing neurologist who immediately did several tests including eeg, mri, and a sleep deprivation test. all came to the same conclusion. Benign Rolandic Seizures. He was 10 when he was diagnosed and once his doctor put him on his medication of Depecote ER (extended release), the episodes started to subside and now he very rarely has them. He's on 3 pills a night (250 mg each). Actually he hasn't had one in about 2 months. and before that, it was about 4 months since he had one. his doctor says he will be on the meds until he's about 15. he has to have a small amount of blood drawn about every 6 months which i was told this is normal with any type of seizure medicine. he hasn't had the first side effect from his meds and to me this specific prescription was a god send. between now and when he turns about 15, his doctor will start lowering his dosage to 2 pills a night and then just one eventually. to all the parents of a child with this issue...I have done ALOT of research on it and i have been told by several different neurologists that the kids normally outgrow it. I've also been told by the same ones that many kids go undiagnosed and unnoticed of even having these types of seizures since they happen at night or first thing in the mornings.  good luck to all of you and i hope my comments have helped in some way. please feel free to contact me if you need to talk.

My son is 9 and was recently diagnosed with Rolandic Seizures.  He went through all the neccessary test which were all negative.  The neurologist said that it is a condition that is common in young boys and is something that they grow out of over time.  Also he mentioned that there are seizures that may arise from lack of sleep.  My son was not given any medication and he says that he has been sleeping well.  We have put him on "strict lights out" scheduled and now cut the television off when he goes to bed; and not to mention good old fashion Prayer.  I believe the doctors, as long as is no activity or scarring on the brain they will be just fine.  Many Blessings to You Concerned Parents and Children.
