3 month old with Focal Epilepsy..please help

Tue, 03/27/2018 - 19:13
My son, Lucien, was diagnosed at 2 months with focal epilepsy. It's on the left hemisphere of his brain. Does anyone here have focal epilepsy? I'm totally new to this...new first time mom, new to epilepsy, etc. He's currently seizure-free on phenobarbital taken once at night. Just wondering what the future might look like for us so i can better prepare, research, etc.

lots of people have focal

lots of people have focal seizures but focal seizures in an infant are not always like an adult with focal seizures. it’s good that he’s responding to meds, that may not seem like a relief because you are still processing some huge concepts, but it’s a really good thing for now. are you working with a pediatric epileptologist who specializes in infants? EEGs are not the same across ages. I know our local children’s hospital has a guy who really focuses on infant epilepsies and infant EEGs. such docs are not interchangeable cogs.with focal epilepsies they usually want imaging. but given his age and other factors, they may suggest genetic testing. make sure you are at a hospital that really is for kids. most hospitals don’t do a good job with kids, kids are not little adults. things are going to change - he’ll grow, seizures might really change, etc - don’t forget to take care of yourself, breathe deeply, keep your sense of humor where possible, etc..

My 2 year old was recently

My 2 year old was recently diagnosed with focal epilepsy. It's new to us as well. She's a week seizure free since adding keppra to her trileptal. From her neurologist and general research, kids can outgrow them or they can be controlled well with medicine once they identify the type of seizure and any triggers. She's had an EEG and the MRI was extremely helpful, she will repeat imaging with the MRI in 3 months and at set intervals in the future to see how her brain is developing/adjusting, etc. My advice: Just let them be a baby/kid! Enjoy your child and just keep track of any type of seizure activity or changes you notice, and hopefully as your baby grows and develops his brain will develop/adjust/ things will align as they're supposed to, etc. That's the hope and prayer I have for my child.
