10 Mo old Seizures Sleep Only

Mon, 07/10/2006 - 21:20
My son was diagnosed with epilepsy at 4 months after a 4 hr EEG. He has partial seizures only in his sleep. His hands and legs jerk slightly and those are the only signs. He is on both Trileptal and Keppra and the amount of slight jerks has not changed. He is happy, energetic and progessing normally. He has never had seizures when he is awake and the severity or type has not changed. But he literally twitches every time he is asleep at least 20 X or more. I have read in other postings that certain seizures do not affect children's brain development. My concern is that as often as these twitches occur how can they not affect his brain development. The doctor just keeps changing the meds or increasing them. Any thoughts on seizures not affecting the brain and what else a extremely frustrated mom can do?

Hi- My daughter (now 8) went undiagnosed for years with nocturnal partial seizures. She was recently diagnosed w/ Frontal Lobe epilepsy and takes trileptal. She had numerous nightly seizures for at least 2 years that we know of and may have even been since infancy. They are pretty unobtrusive and until one generalized we had no idea, as well she was misdiagnosed with a parasomnia at first. When she was finally diagnosed she had neuropsych testing done which evaluates mental brain functioning and pinpoints deficits. After seizures for so long we were worried, but her tests came back fine other than some hand coordination which was explained by her seizure focus. I don't know if this will make you feel better, but at least in our case, we have seen no long term effects from uncontrolled seizures. She is still not completely controlled on trileptal but have cut the frequency by 75% (from every 15 minutes at night to maybe one an hour)
