Seizures due to a viral infection?

Wed, 10/07/2015 - 18:12

Hi

Any helpful commentary on my situation would be very much appreciated.

Background:

Back in January 2015 I had my first seizure ever at the age of 22. It was a tonic clonic seizure that occurred while I was getting ready for work in the morning. At the hospital I had blood drawn, blood pressure checked, sugar levels checked, an EKG done, and a CAT scan. A week later I had an MRI done, but the results from all of these tests came back normal. I was not taking any other medication at the time.

During this time I had a standard EEG test done, and for a few brief seconds at a time they saw abnormal activity but there was no reason they could find why.

As a preventative measure I was prescribed 50 mg of Lamictal at the time. After taking it for one week I had another tonic clonic seizure (again in the morning) and my dose was then upped to 100 mg. My neurologist had me slowly progress to 250 mg of Lamictal over the next few months.

During each increase in dosage I felt tired and had some irritating headaches, but this would subside once my body became used to the dosage.

Fastforward to June I had another tonic clonic seizure in the morning and my dose was increased to 300 mg. In July I had a 72 hour ambulatory EEG done and almost everything was normal except for three instances that only lasted for 2 seconds in which my brainwaves looked briefly abnormal. Due to this my dosage was increased to 350 mg of Lamictal.

It's frustrating to suddenly get seizures at such an odd age and not know the reason, but looking back I am speculating at one possible reason.

So two weeks before the seizure in January I got hit with what seemed like the flu but it hit me harder than any other flu I had before (usually I'd have a fever for maybe 2-3 days, but this once lasted a week). At the time I was dating someone and I'm now wondering if I caught a virus that can lead to chronic seizures. I recently got checked for stds and herpes 1 and herpes 2 and they all came back negative. Is there any sort of virus that can be spread through close contact that can lead to seizures?

As a side note I also contracted Lymes disease when I was 8, but it was quickly caught and after being on antibiotics for a month it disappeared. The symptoms I had did affect my brain however since I displayed Bell's palsy. I've talked to two different neurologists about this and they said that should not have created the seizures I've had.

The whole viral question seems implausible though since it seems any virus that can cause seizures induces brain swelling and no brain swelling was shown in either of the brain scans.

Still, any input would be helpful!
