Concerns about Keppra

Sat, 01/20/2018 - 23:38
Hi, I have recently started coming off epilim and onto Keppra. My doctor says that in some cases Keppra causes depression and I can see on this forum that there are a lot of people referring to this. I’m just wondering if there is anyone out there for whom Keppra HASN’T caused depression? And if so did being aware of the fact that Keppra causes that help you to avoid it? I’m scared that I’m going to become depressed but need to be on a new medication that doesn’t cause problems in pregnancy. I need some positive reviews! Thanks.

when our child dropped keppra

when our child dropped keppra, we were told about a third of the patients dropped it for serious side effect issues (pediatric patients, a higher percentage than adults who drop it).  there are lots of potential side effects on any drug but you can’t know until you try it. when it works well for someone, it’s the best drug and keppra has almost no interaction problems with other drugs, so unlike nearly every other epilepsy med. many epilepsy meds can cause serious mood changes for a small number of patients, black box warnings and all. we’ve only had a major problem with keppra that way, others do great on keppra and poorly on drugs our child has only minor short lasting tiredness.

I recently started taking

I recently started taking Keppra starting at 1000mg and upped to 3000mg now, I've had minimal side effects just irritability and sometimes being really mad for no reason. However, I am on Zoloft for anxiety 25mg a day and vitamin B6. My neurologist said the B6 will help with the mood swings and eventually trying to get off the Zoloft and lower my dose of Keppra once my seizure frequency goes down. Hope this helps! Vitamin B6 really made me happier and less tired on keppra
