What does epilepsy medication do to people without epilepsy?

Wed, 08/15/2018 - 11:01
Does anyone know what effects seizure meds have on people who don't have or no longer have epilepsy? We are currently working very closely with a nutritionist and believe we can improve my son's seizure condition by changing his eating patterns. We need to know what these meds would do in someone who doesn't have epilepsy so we know what to watch for as this treatment goes on. If anyone has any information or links, books, etc you could point us to on this topic, we would really appreciate it!

 Nutrition changes don’t cure

Nutrition changes don’t cure epilepsy, it may change one’ seizure threshold. Everyone with epilepsy has different medication needs, which can change. Learning to avoid seizure triggers doesn’t cure epilepsy either. Consider the major diet that helps many with epilepsy, the ketogenic diet. For some they can get off meds entirely, for others they can reduce meds, and for some it makes no difference. You should be working with your child’s neurologist if you start a ketogenic diet or other major changes. Keto is often started while in the hospital.

Your childs neurologist knows

Your childs neurologist knows about diets that can help with some seizure control. In this site you might find out about the ketogenic diet and the modified Atkins diet. Each persons medication is different as is their seizures. There are many different types of seizures and just because you have only seen one does not mean they can not have another. Some people require a low dose of medications where on the other side they require  larger dose. Medications used to treat epilepsy can be used for many other ailment. Can a diet fix scar tissue in the brain. Can it help fix a group of brain cells that grew wrong? Can it eliminate a tumor? There are many different causes and with most people with epilepsy they can not find the cause. There are people who out grow their epilepsy and have no seizures and need no medication.  Then there are some that do not have seizures but still need medication. It is the words SEIZURE CONTROL that need to be understood. My neurologists have been saying for over 15 years that my seizures are controlled. That does not mean I don't have any/ It means that with medication the number of seizures and the type of seizures has been worked on and I can live a full  life. I worked with my neurologists and today I have seizures that you wouldn't know I had even if you were watching me and we were talking.  I have a seizure every 5-8 days that last a couple of seconds.
