So many meds

Wed, 08/22/2018 - 06:00
I have both generalized and partial seizures. They started at age 27. I am now 38. I feel like I’m on an insane amount of medication. Thankfully I have not had a grand mal in 3 years so the medications have stopped me from going into the tonic clinic stage. However, I still have partial (focal point) seizures that my epileptologist explained originate in my left temporal lobe. All of my seizures affect the right side. Meds keep being added but these are not ceasing.. all of my seizures have always occurred when I’m sleeping so I wake up to them whether it’s at night or even a cat nap. I am having 2-3 per night. I take 3000mg of Keppra XR, 250 mg of Lamictal, 300 mg of Dilantin and 100 mg of Topamax. I see my doctor today and will be speaking to him about their epilepsy center. Are any of you on this many medications and still have reoccurring seizures? Have any of you been to an epilepsy center?

SO MANY MEDS  well finding

Submitted by just_joe on Wed, 2018-08-22 - 18:52
SO MANY MEDS  well finding the right medication and the right doses is not easy to do when there are 60+ different medications. I have focal seizure. They all start with my right hand feeling numb. I have scar tissue in the left lobes of my brain. They always start in the area of my brain that controls the right hand. They always have. I have had few grand mal seizures. But focal seizures can generalize and become grand mal. It took years to find the right medications and dosages to control my seizures like they are controlled today. I have only been trying to get them all stopped for 50+ years. But my specialists have been saying that my seizures are controlled for over 15 years now. As for epilepsy center..<<< When the neurologists started specializing back in the mid 80's my then neurologist introduced me to my neurologist that specialized. They have all worked in epilepsy centers in different hospitals. So if I didn't go to the center I do have an epileptologists  (neurologist that specialize in epilepsy) whose office is right across the street from a hospital. Most major hospitals have epilepsy centers especially in the  children's part of them. Mine were in Presbyterian, Baylor Hospitals here in Dallas. You might want to make sure you are taking your medications correctly. You do need to discuss these seizures and ask questions. Nocturnal seizures are seizures that happen during sleep or right before sleep or after waking up.

Plus I have the V.N.S Still not under control..Think I'm due for a better doctor

I haven't had tonic clonic seizures for 4 years and now I have partial seizures probably 4 times a week, originating in my right temporal lobe. But I am also on a ridiculous amount of medications and have always wondering this as well. I'm on 4,000mg of keppra, 300mg of vimpat, 97.2mg of phenobarbital and 400mg of zonisamide.
