Keppra withdrawal issues

Sat, 06/16/2018 - 11:00
Hi my little girl got off Keppra, we did it slowly 250 mg a month from 2000 a day, everything was going good till the last dose, 3 days after we were done with Keppra she got an aggressive 6 min seizure, exactly one week later she got another seizure for a minute and a half. She also has autism so it’s hard for me to understand how she feels, she insists she’s fine and I shouldn’t worry, can anyone pls help me understand for how long the withdrawal period will last??? Ty in advance Very worried mom

It isn’t clear there are

It isn’t clear there are withdrawal issues. Our child got off keppra much faster. Note that keppra is metabolized very quickly so we saw improvement about a day after the last dose (improvement being the negative side effects stopped, was still on two other drugs so seizures just increased some). When we stopped another drug (also on other drug at the time), had some notable seizures about a week later and then it was okay - this corresponded to time drug left the system but it was rapidly reduced and then not started up again so it wasn’t a slow wean.

Ty Amy, she’s also on

Ty Amy, she’s also on lamectal, I only now, two and a half weeks after the last dose notice improvement in her mood and reactions, she was 3 years on Keppra, maybe that’s why it takes so long?

Kids usually metabolize

Kids usually metabolize keppra faster than adults so... weeks seems a bit unusual. Maybe it is impacted by length of treatment but you also describe a very slow wean. Mention it to your neuro, ask if there’s something that could impact drug choices in the future. Does she have any other condition that could impact her metabolism, have kidney problems, other considerations?
