Keppra on premature baby

Sat, 06/15/2019 - 19:11
Our son was born prematurely 3 weeks ago(35 weeks). In nicu, he started having seizures and they gave him keppra. He did not have any seizures for more than 10 days. They still give him keppra and i understand the rationale behind it. However..i still question whether the seizures would stop regardless of keppra or not..and i am worried about possible side effects of keppra. Any toughts? Another way to ask this question would be..what would happen if you gave keppra to a health premature baby? Thank you for all comments

Hi there, I'm definitely no expert but I had a few thoughts while reading your question.1. You can directly ask your child's doctor or neurologist (whoever chose to give your child keppra) to explain the risks and benefits. Ask about side effects, and ask about long term plans. 2. If you can, learn more about seizures so that you can understand the risks and treatment plan a little better. There are a lot of great resources in the "learn" section of this website.I guess the takeaway I'd like to give you is, if you have questions, ask questions. Speak to the people providing care to your child, and voice your questions and concerns. Write down all your questions before the next time you speak with the doctor, and just ask. Best of luck to you and your baby, Take careB

Thank you for your comment.I

Thank you for your comment.I have been reading a lot about this and i also ask a lot of questions. Doctors seem to think that seizures should be stopped and prevented. That seems to be the consensus. However i have read aan article  somewhere that most premature baby seizures go away on their own and that effect of medication is controvertial. Our doctors believe we see no more seizure thanks to keppra. I am not convinced. However although i can ask them to reduce keppra or stop it..i am not sure thats the right direction either. Since medication has been given..baby is much more sleepy and i wonder if keepra may do any harm. Doctors seem to adress my concers by saying that medication amount is not increasing and since baby is gaining weight..the amount of medication is self tapering. However i am still curious for an answer of the question..what would happen if you gave keppra to a healthy premature baby
