Keppra and Depression

Tue, 02/06/2018 - 00:19
Hello, I am on here asking to hear from other people who are on keppra. I have been on keppra for about 8 or 9 years. I am on 750ml x 2 per day. When I first went on keppra I think I did have keppra rage and there were issues. But that was a long time ago. What I am feeling lately is that I am getting into regular more frequent depression phases. They seem to occur every few months. The depression also seems to be getting worse. The one I am in now has lasted for 3 weeks. Its a constant depression and anxiety. Just wondering, is this something others have heard of, getting into more and deeper depression after taking keppra for a long time? I am starting to take b6 again to see if that helps. I dont really want to change my medication because I feel its working for me. But i also want to try to get this depression under control. I am debating whether I should ask to see a psychiatrist? I just dont know what will come of that and whether they will just want to put me on more different medication.

I know about keppra and I do

I know about keppra and I do know dosages do need to be looked at. When I started taking it my dosage was about like yours is now. But I was also on another medication. So it took a little time to get me off both and onto keppra alone. The dosage was changed after we saw my seizures were still about the same in numbers. Doc and I worked at controlling my seizures and at the same time stopping the side effects. One thing that helped was B6 which I got from caltrate or citracal. So do work with your neurologist and discuss these issues with them

I’m on a low dose of lamotrigine but it makes me have intense anger/rage, and anxiety as well as I’ll just sob for hours and can’t control it. However, that’s only when I’m not on a mood med to counter these side effects. Talk with your neurologist but I’d also see a Psych. I’ve been seeing and working with both to find a good mood med that I can tolerate and still be okay on my lamotrigine.

I was on Keppra years ago.

I was on Keppra years ago. Except for depression, everything was fine. The depression did get worse, to the point, I was close to acting on it. Keep an eye on it and talk to someone, before it gets that bad. I HOPE YOU'RE DOING BETTER!
