Keppra and Anxiety, Depression, Rage

Mon, 08/27/2018 - 17:56
I've been on Keppra for over ten years now, since about the age of 17. In that time, I've suffered extended periods of anxiety and depression and had several instances of intense rage. I have never stopped to think that these extreme feelings might be related to this drug I've been taking every day for 10 years, but after reading accounts from so many people on this board with similar experiences... well, the correlation seems so obvious. I'm only now starting to figure out what to do to put my life back together without this drug that has caused me so much misery. I cannot take it anymore, but every neurologist I have seen over the years talks about Keppra being a "wonder drug" and the solution to my problems. Keppra may have mitigated my seizures but it has created so many problems for me. This drug ruined my most important relationships and caused me years of suffering. I've seen therapists and counselors for years. I've read the self-help books, done the meditations, but nothing has really worked. I thought that I needed to work harder or to try some other tool. Turns out that all of my problems would have been so much smaller if only I stopped putting this poison in my body. Have any of you been where I am now? If so, how do I start to put my life back together? How do I find a treatment that prevents my seizures and allows me to live a happy, love-filled life?

Keep track of all meds, seizures, and their effects.  Find another doctor.  Maybe Keppra is a "wonder drug" for this doctor as he or she gets great rewards from prescribing it.

Well Keppra was renamed years

Well Keppra was renamed years ago by people that had that side effect. They called it KepRAGE. Did you ever read the side effects listed on papers you received with your prescriptions? You can start by changing your medication since there are about 60 different medications that can stop seizures. Yes Keppra has been the go to medication to stop seizures. But there have been other go to medications. I know I was on some of them.Talk to your neurologist since you have a side effect and see which medication they might put you on. I hope your neurologist specializes in epilepsy since they know more about the medications that can control your seizures better then regular neurologists.Joe

We've been thru the rage and

We've been thru the rage and even though my son is off it I feel like we are still dealing with after effects. I've written our story on other posts but my son is 17 with autism so it's difficult for him to tell me how he feels. Keppra kept him seizure free but the rage was unacceptable. We then tried Lamictal, Trileptal, dilantin and now on Vimpat and Briviact. Not having tonic/clonic but having focal and partial seizures. Now he has anxiety and compulsions too. It's adolescence mixed in too so we have a ton of challenges. B6 didn't help him.  Too many options for you to stay on this drug!
