Gradually weaning off Epilim

Sun, 07/22/2018 - 06:47
Hello, l am 61yr female who has taken Epilim for over 30 years for absent epilepsy . I’ve not had a absence since 1989 .My dose has been 400 am & 400 pm for as long as I can remember. Finally my GP & neurologist have decided l can be gradually weaned off Epilim. It’s week 5 & the only difference lm finding is that l am more alert , concentration is sharper less effort is required and l wake every morning noticeably refreshed . I have 10 weeks still to go until l am hopefully drug free. Epilim has hugely effected my body weight l gained 6stone in the first 6months & gradually gained more & more as it zapped my energy. What side effects have anyone else experienced as they have reduced Epilim ?

Hi Belle, great to hear you

Hi Belle, great to hear you're able to get off meds and I hope it works out for you :) I was only on epilim for 3 years and that was 3 years too many- I still think it's the most evil drug ever invented. It was over 20 years ago but I still remember how it felt coming off it- the weight dropping off (I gained 10st but unfortunately was never able to lose it all, still very bitter about that) and the complication of morbid obesity reversing, getting my energy back, not sleeping 16hrs a day, and like you say, more alert. Basically, "waking up." I'm still on AEDs and I'd probably wake up if I came of these too, but these ones have never made me feel as bad as epilim did.(No weight gain either!) Good luck with it, and enjoy feeling alert!
