Worsening seizures (while no increase in alcohol)

Wed, 05/23/2018 - 08:02
Doctors have been treating me since I was a toddler. My seizures have got more freqent and more severe over the last 5 years. I've been keeping a log of them, the build up to them and how I felt after. 5 years ago they were happening every 6 - 8 weeks and the great thing is that there was always a warning sign in the morning that it was going to be a day were I have a seizure. Also they were only partial seizures. 2 years ago they were happening every 4 weeks. One day I had a full seizure (my first full seizure in 20 years) and the neuro upped the Lamictal from 200mg x 2/day to 250mg x 2/day. Now they are happening every 3 weeks and the worst bit is that they happen out of the blue i.e. there is no warning that it's going to be a day of seizures. They have only been partial seizures over the last year. I'm reluctant to go to the neuro again at the moment because I'm working self-employed so can't afford to risk having medication changes that backfire and make things go from bad to worse. Before conceding that I need to let the Neuro try out different medicines, I was wondering whether it's work experimenting with giving up alcohol or whether it would be a waste of effort? Here's the pattern....: 5 years ago I was drinking 3 pints, 3 nights/week Today I'm typically drinking 2 pints Tuesday night and 3 pints Saturday night. Seizures have never happened while drinking, nor have they happened the day after. Strange that they are worse now than they were 5 years ago when I was drinking more often. Is it worth the time/effort of seeing whether giving up drinking would make a difference? Or are seizures a vicious circle where having 1 makes you more likely to have another, and that's why they've become more freqent and more severe? Thanks

Seizures and their patterns

Seizures and their patterns can and do  change over time. Things we could do at one point in our lives without consequences may not be doable some point down the road.  Do you get your drug levels checked regularly?  It's really important when you're not controlled.  I think it might be worth it to see if you can go  3 months with just a few (like 2 or 3,  no more) on the weekends if you think it's necessary.  Keep a seizure diary, and make sure you're eating and sleeping well.  You should have a better idea after that.  Best of luck!
