Staying Asleep

Sun, 05/31/2020 - 12:40
Hi everyone, I am new to this forum but I have been living with epilepsy for 20 years. Over the past two years, my condition has declined somewhat, and I am having frustrating new symptoms that I didn't have before. One of them is an inability to stay asleep in the morning. I am waking up earlier and earlier despite all my attempts to stay asleep. This morning and yesterday I was up at 5:15 and 5:37, respectively, and this is on a weekend day when I want to be sleeping in (until at least 8 AM lol). Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, can you give me any advice on what to do about it?

Hi, Thank you for posting. Practicing good sleeping habits is important for both physical and mental health. Not enough, or poor quality of sleep is a common trigger for some individuals living with epilepsy. https://www.epilepsy.com/sites/core/files/atoms/files/Sleep%20factsheet.pdf . It’s important that you address these challenges and the newer symptoms you’re experiencing with your healthcare team, who can work with you to determine what individual treatment plan is best for you. Be open and honest about how you’re feeling, and how this is affecting your health and daily life. For tips on setting a healthy bedtime routine, sleeping better and more, watch our video on Sleep and Epilepsy: https://www.epilepsy.com/article/2020/3/wellness-institute-whiteboard-video-sleep-and-epilepsy . You may want to consider keeping a journal or a diary to document how you’re feeling and the symptoms you describe experiencing in detail, which will be very helpful to review with your doctors. My Seizure Diary, can be used to organize health issues, track seizures, manage medications, develop seizure response plans, and more: https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/epilepsy-foundation-my-seizure-diary . Additionally, you may always contact our 24/7 Helpline, where trained information specialists are available to answer your questions, offer help, hope, support, guidance, and access to national and local resources. 1-800-332-1000, contactus@efa.org. epilepsy.com/helpline , or contact your local Epilepsy Foundation: https://www.epilepsy.com/affiliates
