New here-Does exercise affect seizures?

Sat, 05/29/2004 - 20:21
Hi. I'm new here, my father told me about this site and I decided to check it out.I'm a 24 year old woman with general epilepsy. It's well controlled with Lamictal and I have an otherwise normal life. Except that intense exercise seems to linked to my seizures. You name it, I did it. Kickboxing, step, weight lifting, spinning. I love what it does for me, it keeps me fit and is a good stress reliever. But unfortunately, I've had a seizure while running last year and two at the gym and one in gym class in highschool. I forget to take my medicine on occasion. I guess I don't dwell on my epilepsy. I know I could have a far worse condition-like having seizures everday or cancer.Does exercise influence anyone else's seizures? What do you do instead? At the moment I'm relegated to yoga and walking and low intensity weight lifting. I was planning on being an aerobics instructor once I got to school (I will be a graduate student). Right now though, I'm chomping at the bit. I try to remind myself to take it slow and this is for the best. But it's hard.Does anyone have any suggestions or insights? Thanks in advance for your help.

No suggestions or insights, just lots and lots of empathy. My heart aches for you and the uncertainty of not knowing when or if you will be able to go back to all the exericse activities you love. For people like us, something dies inside our soul when we can't experiece the joy of movement. I'm chomping at the bit as well. It is hard when we have to eliminate activities we love because of an illness. I was in 7th heaven taking ballet & pilates classes and dancing at church! But between an ankle injury and my epilepsy/headache problem, I haven't been able to exercise for months and I won't be able to go back until we find the right drug. It could be a month or a year away. I'm so sedated from the drugs, I can barely get off the couch, let alone exercise. Traveling in a car is what triggers my seizures/headaches. So even if the side effects go away, until the problem is completely solved, I can't leave the house to get to my exercise classes!

One thing to note On all of this. We are taking meds. When we are not doing much. When we start Moving alot the Meds runs in are body. So the effect dont last so long. Or they run stronger in a shorter time.Like me 2 days ago I was helping cut wood and moving the wood. And the temp was 35f out I was not cold but shaking. This is due to the meds running faster in your body. So I had to stop working. Before I had the seizures I had a good job and I was moving alot. Manufacture company. So I did alot in 8 Hours. But now if I do too much in 2 hours I start to shake. And I'm a person that when it 40f or 20f I'm not cold. So you cant say it was the weather.Remember the meds last a long time when we dont do much. But when we are hot the Meds dont last so long.
