Help me plz

Sat, 10/26/2019 - 14:37
I should start by saying I do not have epilepsy but I have an extreme extreme extreme fear that controls my life of passing out and seizures. I'm here to try to gain control back and talk to people who actually suffer so I can stop being so ignorant and get my life back. I had extreme ocd and anxirty to the point that my anxiety will mimic stereotypical seizure symptoms. My legs twitch very badly, I zone out a lot and I shake like crazy (allnrelated to my mental health) I'm only 24 and the fear has ruined my life with the ocd factor where I've spent HUNDREDS of hours researching epilepsy and seizures. This is me trying to get my life back so please please help me I'm 24. No head trauma, no family history and I'm extremely healthy. I have this irrational fear I'm going to just drop one day and have a seizure Please smack some sense into me. I am very sorry to be coming here very ignorant of a real issue you all possess but please understand I have no ill intentions I'm really just trying to get my life back . I know this is a serious issue you all face daily. Unfortunately my ocd and obsessions with seizures is also becoming very problematic as I cannot function. I understand you can develop epilepsy later in life and randomly have seizures. This terrifies me. Please educate me

I’m a licensed clinical

Submitted by Patriotrehab on Sat, 2019-10-26 - 15:15
I’m a licensed clinical social worker and certified rehabilitation counselor as well as a person with epilepsy. While 1 in 24 persons will experience epilepsy at some point in their lives, that also means that 23 in 24 will not. I have extensive experience working with people who have all kinds of so-called mental health disorders including what you have described. While I am not in a position to diagnose your symptoms as psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) or to do a mental status exam and diagnose you as having OCD or anxiety, it sounds like you have already been told that you have these diagnoses or you believe that your symptoms at least match what you have read about them. Your fear about epilepsy may actually only increase by researching it more because you will be “feeding” your unconscious to mimic seizures when the appropriate treatment for PNES and other mental health disorders like OCD and anxiety is psychotherapy. There is a very helpful website devoted to non-epileptic seizures that even has a documentary with others who have similar experiences. https://nonepilepticseizures.com/ I don’t agree with everything that they say on the website because of my experience working with clients who have PNES, but it is written based on the experiences of other clinicians and some general information from the field. Many people who are motivated to be healed and actively engage in psychotherapy become symptom free of PNES in less than a year. I hope this information helps you!

Gee, I've had epilepsy for

Submitted by Chrissyml on Wed, 2019-11-06 - 18:26
Gee, I've had epilepsy for over 50 years. Honestly, seizures aren't the worst thing that can happen to a person. Maybe you should read "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Bad Ideas and Good Intentions are Setting an Entire Generation Up for Failure." by Jon Haidt and Greg Lukianoff. It tells how teachers, universities, media, and parents have created an entire generation of young people who are anxious, depressed, and unable to deal with adversity.
