Epilepsy & Tourettes

Does anyone have any knowledge of whether or not a person can have both of these? My 8 yr old son has frontal lobe epilepsy and from time to time has tics that show up on EEG as not seizures but epileptic-form activity so his dr thinks they are tics and he could have tourettes also. he does not have vocal tics at all. thanks

You can have Tourette's and Epilepsy at the same time. They are both caused by something totally different. But the tics could also be caused by side effects of medication. You ought to talk to the neurologist about that before you start diagnosing your son with Tourette's Syndrome. I'm surprised the neurologist hasn't mentioned that already. He may be taking too much of one medication, the wrong medication or if he's taking more than one medication he could be combining the wrong medications. You ought to do your own research on the internet, find out the maximum dosages, possible side effects, what meds can and can't be mixed of the medication(s) your son is on. I had to do that when my old neurologist messed up my medication. That's a long story. It's always good to do your own research. Also there are some good Tourette's Syndrome websites. Just look up Tourette's Syndrome. The Epilepsy Foundation is good www.efa.org.I hope this helps. Good Luck.Heather Tulsa, OK

The EFA site is a very good one,as is your advice to do both your own research, and talk further with the neuro.Always wise advice..Side effects from med combos can play havoc with an adult, let alone a child and need careful consideration both before starting then titrating the dosage.Simply to avoid potential problems long term.

Tourettes

I don't know if what I experience you can call tourettes, but from what I'm told, I have been known to rattle off a few obcenities when I have a seizure. I never know what I say, or why I say it, there are a few times when I've said things I probably shouldn't have.
