Swimming With Epilepsy

Wed, 10/18/2017 - 17:34
Hey! So I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 9 and unfortunately, I'm a freshman in high school now and I still haven't grown out of it. 8 months ago I had my last tonic clonic seizure at track practice, and they figured out it was hormone induced and put me on progesterone and I haven't had a seizure since. Last year I was also on a swim team, but I unfortunately had to quit due to stress and epilepsy. But this year, I'm in high school and am able to try out for the school swim team. The coach knows about my history, because he was my past swim coach, and said he would do what he could to make the experience safe. Being that I'm 8 months free (no absence seizures, periods, or tonic clonic!!) Do you think it's safe to swim?

what about focal seizures???

what about focal seizures??? In those the person looks like they are day dreaming. But they can see, hear and understand everything. They can last a few seconds and up to a minute. So in them you wouldn't know anything unless you tried to respond to someone's voice/ You would not be able to do your swimming  until the seizure is over. Focal seizures can also be any of the partial seizures and since you have had tonic clonic seizures then they can generalize. Research them in this site and have your coach research them. I couldn't be in swimming but that was back in the stone ages (1960's) in PE the coach let me swim and I even taught some of the other students how to do some of the dices. If swimming in the lanes he had a senior on the swimming team on both sides of me just in case I had any of the seizures I was having.
