Seizure or not 3 Year old

Thu, 02/21/2019 - 15:19
Hello, My 3.5 year old is a healthy child with no major issues other than seasonal viral fevers and ear infections. One day he woke up to vomit and my husband took him to the bathroom. He did not vomit but he mentioned that he has stomach boo boo. I took him in my arms and gave him some sugar to make him feel a little better. Then he started staring and was not responding even after calling his name. I splashed some water on his face but he still did not respond and the staring continued. He was not fixed to something or one side but he was looking everywhere without any response to our actions. This continued for 5 mins. Then my husband felt that he was not breathing and must be choking on something. At some point he closed his eyes but we don't remember as we were panicking. I tried to see if he had any activity in his mouth and he bit my finger twice when I put my finger in his mouth which made me realize he was still breathing but we did Heimlich maneuver for 5 mins anyway since we did not know what to expect. He did not respond all this while but he was opening his eyes and closing. By the time medicos came and asked us to lay him down, he was sleeping. They took his vitals and said everything looked normal. Then my husband took him to take him to the hospital and when I tried to take him from my husband, he did not come to me which is how he does in his sleep. At the hospital, he woke up when they were setting up the IV and also other monitoring and he did not like the blood pressure monitoring (or ECG not sure) that was put to his leg. He tried to remove it and was acting normal but was still very sleepy. He slept for 3 hours waking up when doctor or others came into the room. They took his blood work and said everything seems to be normal. Doctor said that it was a seizure. They sent us home with a referral to the Neurologist as outpatient. Did not take EEG. He has been acting very normal from then on and this happened on Feb 10 and today is Feb 21. We have the Neurologist appt coming this Monday. We went to his pediatrician but she was of not much help. She did his neuro exam and said everything looks fine and said it may or may not be a seizure.

Events leading up to this

Events leading up to this behavior:He slept at past 12 that night as we had some ppl over in our house and got disturbed quite a bit in his sleep as we all were playing some board games. He was sick in the month of January with viruses back to back since he goes to a day care and had few vomiting episodes while he was sick.He was also on antibiotics until the prior Tuesday and this happened on Sunday (he was not on antibiotics when this happened)Timeline:Slept: 12- 12:30AM (usual time 9:00 - 10:00 PM)woke up- around 7:15AM trying to vomitCalled 911 - around 7:26 AM and they arrived in 6 minsBetween 7:17 AM - 7:32 AM, he stared and then closed his eyes and went back to sleep.I have been madly searching for someone who went through a similar situation but did not find anything. My questions are,Does it look like a seizure or some sleep disorder?Do I ask Neurologist for additional testing even if he believes that it may not be required until it happens again?Does it look like Syncope or low oxygen supply to his brain?Do people sleep immediately after seizure as if nothing happened?Could he still be sleeping or in some sleepy state? Not sure about this as he responded about stomach boo boo when asked. It looks like an absence seizure but he slept after that normally and it happened for 5-7 mins.

Yeah, sounds very like

Yeah, sounds very like seizures. Seizures can look like a lot of things so ask the neurologist about what else it could be. But really, if he didn’t respond to a lot of what was done that screams seizure. My kid has another condition where she’ll vomit and neurologists like to jump to seizures but in this case the other stuff sounds like seizure descriptions in Panayiotopoulos Syndrome. Ask about what you need to do for first aid if it’s a seizure (putting anything in the mouth is not ok, assuming airway isn’t obstructed, learn safer ways to test that). It could be an epilepsy they wouldn’t ordinarily treat but the apparent status (status epilepticus) is something to ask about.
