Normal EEG, now what?

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 09:46
My 8 your own daughter had what is believed to be a seizure two weeks ago. She had a normal CT at the hospital. We were scheduled for an EEG two weeks after the episode this past Friday. I just received the results and they read that the EEG showed waves of youth but that it was not of concern & that the EEG was "basically normal." It was only a 20 minute EEG so I'm not totally comfortable with the results. I'm so frustrated that they did not perform the EEG the day of the episode. We meet with our family Dr to discuss the results but I'm not sure what our next step should be.

it used to be the medical types would wait for a second seizure before thinking it's epilepsy and starting meds, now one seizure and an abnormal eeg is considered ok. if you think there's a continuing problem or just your hit days something is off, then definitely ask for a referral to a neurologist. the first eeg is often inadequate for many people with epilepsy but one in ten people have a seizure yet only one in 26 has epilepsy. did they take blood at the ED to check for conditions which aren't epilepsy but can cause seizures which they could immediately check? a variety of things mimic epilepsy, it can be hard to diagnose.

They took blood work the date

They took blood work the date of the episode. They said they were looking for for deficiencies and it all came back normal. I was worried because I noticed her jerking her hands in her sleep the night after her EEG when I went to check on her, but I was unable to record it. I haven't noticed her doing it since. The only thing it says on her EEG is that the occipital rhythm was interrupted by slow waves of youth. Do you know what this means? It wasn't a sleep deprived EEG if that helps. The rest of it says "essentially normal." I may just wait & see if I notice anything out of the ordinary again & try to record it. Her diagnosis as of now is aphasic migraine unless anything changes.
