Migraines & Epilepsy and the testing inlvoved to

Tue, 09/12/2017 - 20:13
I am 38 years old (female) and I have chronic migraines. Most days in a month I have a migraine. I've tried preventative meds like Topamax which didn't work. I've been on I'm Imitrex the longest, however my insurance only allows 9 pills per month, which means most of the month I'm in agony of the excruciating pain of migraine. My neurologist referred me to a pain management specialist to get Botox injections. After the 2nd round, I felt a slight difference in the frequency of migraines, but not much. The beginning of August was my last round of injections and something happened because the entire month of August I was in extream pain with a migraine. Not only was the pain severe, my left eye would not open (migraine throbbing/pain is on the left side of forehead). My right eye I could open it, but it was quite blurry and basically had little to no vision. After the month of August I've decided against further Botox injections. I saw my Neurologist yesterday and he agreed about no more Botox. He is going to keep me on Imitrex , but he is also adding Depakote, which I know is typically given to people with Epilepsy. He said there have been studies shown that Depakote could work for migraines as well. Before the new prescription of Depakote, I knew there was a connection between migraines and epilepsy. Something about people with migraines are more prone to have epilepsy and people with epilepsy are more likely to have migraines. I asked my Neurologist about the connection and if I should be concerned about it. He said no because I don't or haven't mentioned signs of epilepsy. I've never had a Grand Mal Seizures, but I know there are lot of different types of seizures not as severe as Grand Mal seizures. I'm familiar with Petit Mal seizures and a lot of other type of seizures where people often don't realize they have had a seizure. My question is how does a person know if they have these types of seizures? What types of testing needs to be done? My pain management specialist had me do an MRI which came out normal. I've never been tested for epilepsy for the simple fact that I have never had the Grand Mal seizures. I've had chronic migraines my entire life, since around 7 or8 years old. I'm thinking an EEG would show this, but my Neurologist doesn't seem to think I have epilepsy, but the fact that he is giving me Depakote makes me curious about it. Should I see my primary care physician and get referred out to get an EEG, just as a precaution or should I just leave it be? I don't want to sound like a hypochondriac, it just surprised me when my Neurologist prescribed a known drug for epilepsy. It should also be known I'm seeing a psychiatrist and psychologist. The psychiatrist has me on a high dosage of Effexor (which is prescribed for extreme depression, anxiety, and paranoia problems) and Xanax. Any information you can give me about the connection of migraines and epilepsy and the testing involved, etc. Thank you.

I take medicine and shots for

I take medicine and shots for my migraines and nothing is helping mine at this point. It has know been almost a month since I have had a ongoing sever migraine and I have started having seizures with it. I have a MRI and a EEG test coming up but I just got diagnosed with complex partial onset seizures along with secondary onset seizures. At first I didn't know I was having seizures and apparently I have been having them for over a year and they have been getting worse but I have no memory of having them until here recently. The seizures are getting worse and so are my migraines. Good luck with getting your test and answers you need.
