We need a support group!!

I have realized through doing research, that there are not many support groups for epilepsy, where people get together and talk about their experiences. I think this website is great!! I know I will learn alot here. But I am just curious about support group meetings in particular, "in person" meetings...Setting aside two hours a week to go to a meeting..Like AA has their meetings, NA has their meetings, ex-offenders have their meetings, churches have their meetings, domestic violence has their meetings. I just have to say that we are all overcomers of some adversity in life, but epilepsy is undeniably an adversity that needs more support! It is the surmounting of difficulties that make heroes. Louis Kossuth Some things people would not share on this website, like the emotions of their experiences, tears and memories, and the strength one could give another, like energy, cannot be done solely online. Sharing your story "in person" is a transferring of that energy to someone else who becomes inspired and stronger just by hearing you tell your story. We are all heroes by overcoming adversities, we must share these stories so others, like young children who have epilepsy can be stronger in coping with their illness, so they can hear what we have been through and how we overcome adversity. I can not find a support group! I would like to volunteer my time to a support group. My aunt would really like to go to a support group where she can meet other people who have been through the same thing she has been through since she was 16 years old. If anyone knows of any support groups in Chicago, Illinois, please, please, let me know!! We would love to go to one.. And if you see that it is hard to find one also, then maybe we can start our own support group!! Signed Amanda J Blucher

Hi Amanda, Welcome and glad to hear of your interest in groups. Giving as well as receiving support can be so helpful, no matter how it is done.. Here's a link to info about groups http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/support_groups.html For resources, have you been in touch with the Epilepsy Foundation of Chicago? I believe they have a number of groups. Also, Jim Davies, one of the early founders of epilepsy self-help groups is from Chicago and works for that affiliate. Rush University, as well as some of the universities in that area may have some as well. Start by checking out the EF in that area. Here is a link directly to their list of groups for adults. I think they also have ones for parents and teens. http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/local/chicago/adultgroups.cfm Hope you find this helpful ! Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist

Amanda, It can be hard to find support groups in your area. I know for I used to run several of them in my area. There are many on the internet that can give you great support just like this group. I also have a support group on the internet. Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/
