Is my Epilepsy back?

Wed, 03/10/2004 - 15:23
Hi, I have a history of Epilespy. Starting when I was 6. I am now 26. However up until a week ago I had had no seizures or medicatoin since I was 20. Therefore I had presumed I had "Outgrown" it. A week ago a doctor who did not ask my medical history gave me "Tramadol" for some pain I had. That night I had a grand mal seizure. Iv'e since read that Tramadol can trigger seizures in people with Epilepsy. But does this mean I still had/have epilespy all along and that just happend to trigger a seizure or was it just a freak side effect from the Tramadol. Should I still then be on medication? Sorry I am probably not making much sense.

I wouldn't assume that your epilepsy is back just yet. Get an EEG, see if it picks up any abnormal brain activity under stress. It's possible that this particular med triggered something in your brain, and maybe it won't happen again. Hopefully, it was a fluke of some kind, and there won't be a need for you to start taking meds again.Good luck to you!Heather

Thanks for the reply – I didn't think anyone was going to answer! I don't see much point in getting an EEG cause I had quite a few when I was younger and they were always normal. Its been over 2 weeks now and I haven't had any more so maybe it was just a fluke.
