No seizures during my period, anyone else?

Wed, 04/15/2020 - 13:10
I somehow just made this connection. It always seemed so random because they were happening all through the the month except for my period. I guess I wasn’t looking at when I wasn’t having seizures. Is this a pattern for anyone else?

I haven’t experienced that, but I know that my doctors had me track my seizures especially around my period before because there is some information that some women tend to have a change in their seizures around different parts of their cycle. But, from what I’ve read, most of the studies show that the seizures for these women are more frequent during their period or fertile periods. Now, that doesn’t mean that somehow, you may have discovered something that may be valuable to your doctors that you should share with them. For example, the doctors ran all kinds of blood work on me when I was in the hospital for video EEG monitoring and I think it even included looking at hormonal levels and vitamin levels. So, maybe they would be interested in comparing samples of your blood during different times of the month to see if there is anything significant, like changes in hormone levels. Or maybe they’ll say that it’s just a thing for you or decide to study it more closely in some other way. In the end if you can get your seizures under control without side effects, that’s still the goal of treatment.

Hi,Thank you for posting. It’s important that you were able identify a change in your seizure patterns/ frequency occurring during your menstrual cycle, which will be helpful to review with your healthcare team. Many women with epilepsy see changes in the number or the pattern of their seizures around the time of ovulation (mid-cycle), or just before and at the beginning of their menstrual periods. It's important to understand that people differ in their hormonal sensitivity. If hormones are found to affect a person's seizures, there may be a role for hormones in epilepsy treatment. https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/women/all-women/hormones-and-epilepsy . You may want to consider keeping a journal or a diary to help keep track of your seizures & your menstrual cycle. This can help your healthcare detect possible patterns & help determine what individual treatment plan may be best for you. My Seizure Diary can be used to organize your health issues, track seizures, manage medications, record side effects, other therapies or personal experiences and more which can be shared with members of your healthcare team. https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/epilepsy-foundation-my-seizure-diary
