Epileptic/Mom/Nurse

Hi all! I'm new to this website but unfortunately not new to epilepsy. I've had it my whole life and had my first tonic clonic when I was 18 in college - I should mention that I was drinking a lot and using a lot of drugs which is what pushed me over into grand mal. I got sober at 20 and the seizures decreased tremendously - shocking I know! It helps when you take your meds too! I went 13 years without a seizure and then after having my baby, 10 months ago, I have had 4. Most recently was a week ago and I was driving with my baby in the back seat. Fortunately I had an aura and pulled onto a curb and put the car in park before seizing. After going to the hospital and getting my lab work done it turns out that my medication level in my blood is really low. I take Lamictal 400mg and they increased it to 500mg. My level was 4.7 and they want it to be 10-12. I'm scared to death right now of doing anything. The DMV has suspended my license - which I totally agree with - and say I can put in for a hearing to get it back. It doesn't say how long I have to go without it if I don't put in for the hearing so if anyone has experience with this can you let me know? I'm so grateful no one got hurt and my baby is safe - she had a great time with the paramedics haha. I'm truly grateful to be a part of this resource and I'm so glad to have found all of you!

It depends on the state that you live, some states don’t require a specified time limit, others have a time limit as little as 3 months or as great as a year of being seizure free, but because they told you that you can have a hearing, it sounds like your state has an appeal process. Here is a link to the database state-by-state. https://www.epilepsy.com/driving-laws/2008686 Regardless, they usually want your doctor to be in support of you driving. Hope that helps.
