Andrew Vasek

I am entering this in memorium for my cousin, Andrew Vasek. Andrew was 21 years old and a picture of perfect health in September of 2014 when his mom, Nancy, heard the shower run late one night. She thought something was wrong when the shower didn't cease in a timely manner. She found him on the bathroom floor deceased. They tried so hard to revive him. I suppose in the mystery of God's ways, it was his time. Andrew had no medical problems. He was an athletic sort and quite the charmer. His death September 2014 was sudden and unexplainable. For months, the autopsy dragged on and the whole family was in shock. The reason for his death remained a mystery. The only thing they would release was that they found nothing wrong, except he had somehow lost consciousness and aspirated his stomach contents. After almost 4 months of my cousin Nancy calling every Friday to UTMB to ask if they had any more information, they finally had determined his cause of death: grand mal seizure. It took them a long time to investigate and determine what had caused his death. They shared that they eventually found his brain was consistent with a person who was going to enter into adult onset epilepsy. They were able to confirm that his muscles has contracted violently for an extended period of time. He never had a chance to fight his epilepsy. His family is so freaking amazing. I can't tell you how much I love them all. They started just a few months after his death a fundraiser for the students of Matagorda County in Andrew's name. The Andrew Vasek memorial BBQ fundraiser is now held each April in Matagorda, TX. The first year, 2015, was sort of thrown together and we were all stunned at the response. The second year was much more organized and formal and has raised an impressive amount of money. All money raised is given away to students in Matagorda country on an unrestricted basis for educational purposes. And this fundraiser is getting bigger. For the third year, which is going to be in April 2017, I want to introduce formal education on epilepsy. I am hoping to learn from this forum and glean resources to share with everyone there. The fundraiser starts on a Friday evening and doesn't stop until late Saturday night, with the main day being on Saturday. I am hoping there can be someone from this foundation (or similar) who might be able to be represent and educate all who filter through for the fundraising activities. We have all lived with such deep sorrow over his death. We are Andrew Strong and blessing others in his memory.
