Newly diagnosed with epilepsy - lost driving licence.

Wed, 06/03/2020 - 13:42
Hi, I recently was on medicinal steroids which resulted in me catching a cold for 2 weeks which I couldn't fight due to the steroids and then playing on a VR headset which resulted in me having my first ever seizure back in February 2020 whilst dealing with an untreated illness causing me severe undernourishment and a low BMI at the time. I then had an EEG completed and it indicated genetic epilepsy but I haven't had any seizures since and I started taking Epilim at the end of May, I lost my driving licence but I am very confused by the DVLA guidelines on this. From what I can gather, the DVLA will consider giving you your licence back in 6 months if the seizure is provoked but not if its a brain disease. Although they deem seizures to be epileptic only if there are 2 or more seizures that have occurred. Now, there is no history of epilepsy in my family and since the EEG I have not been having the jolty-ness I was having previously, even before taking the Epilim and flashing lights have never affected me (raves, flashing torches, videogames etc.) so I know I am not at risk of another. Will I get my licence back in 6 months or 12 months? Also does having epilepsy affect my insurance? I've only been driving 4 months prior so my insurance is already 1.5k p/a Thanks in advance. Also I have seen a lot of discussion on this online, so if you state an opinion based on interpretation, personal experience or professional experience, could you please state which one it is although all replies are welcome.
