Memory And Neuropsychological tests.. . kicked out?!

Tue, 06/14/2011 - 19:40

Wondering if anyone has ever had to discontinue their memory/neuropsych testing due to inconsistent unreliable results?

I went for testing for the first time today and after an hour of doing word and shape memory tests, (which I really was trying at) the Dr came in and said that they had to discontinue because the results weren't reliable and wouldn't help them diagnose me.

They said that people with senile dementia living in a nursing home had scored better than I had on those specific tests, and I couldn't be that badly off because I am a young mom at home with two small children, right?

I do appear to be pretty high functioning, but my memory and cognition and destroyed. . .

I asked why that would happen, and they said that they dodn't think I was trying to do it, but that sleep, medication, pain level, or unconscious stress could have made the answers different?!

They said they will try again in a month . . . but  my question is, does anyone know about this?

Do I just look like a big faker?

Can you even fake these tests?

Thanks!

I had that happen to me and I was asked to leave.  I was exhausted that day.  I work and have partial seizures and really had a hard time concentrating.

The person in lab noted I was having a hard time.  She told me lets do the testing another day.  Me ego was slightly hurt but I knew she was right !  I was a space cadet that day!  It was not enough sleep, simple partial seizures.  I was zoned!!!

The next time I did it , I was a lot better!  I wasn't perfect but the test went alot smoother!

I had my feedback appointment with the neuropsychologist today. She basically told me that both times, the tests that are administered to see if they will be able to test you further showed that I was unable to complete the tasks. That is why she discontinued. Both times. She didn't know why, even though I know I wasn't under any external stress.

I told her that I felt that I had been having simple partial seizures during the testing. I would describe it like this:

when you are on a cell phone, and it drops a call, then you have to dial back in again and restart the conversation; "kinda like, where was I?

when I was taking those tests, all of the sudden I would find myself completely disoriented and unsure of where I was or what I was supposed to be doing. My memory of what I was doing was gone. I had to try and retrace my steps, some times with no success.

She said that they are trained to watch for absence seizures. . . not the same thing I don't think, but she wasn't there and her tech was a vile woman. She wasn't observing me at all.

She said the results (before we discontinued) showed that I waas very low functioning (like nursing home potential) and again, that I was, to the best of her knowledge living on my own and raising 2 kids so she knew it was invalid. I think that is because if my simple partial seizures and a medication change might siginifcantly change this.

So, anyone who has simple partial seizures, does any of this sound familiar?

Thanks so much

Neuropsychological tests are specifically designed tasks used to measure a psychological function known to be linked to a particular brain structure or pathway. Tests are used for research into brain function and in a clinical setting for the diagnosis of deficits. And reading your written statement above I couldn't understand why the doctor had to stopped the tests. Doesn't he have further explanations of telling that the test results were inconsistent/unreliable? Or did the doctor offers some recommendations? GAR Labs
