Conscious through Grand mal

Mon, 04/06/2020 - 14:46
Hi everyone. I’m new here. I’ve had epilepsy for almost 25 years now and I’ve never talked to anyone who has been awake for a grand mal seizure before. My seizures are controlled by Lamictal and Depakote. My most recent seizure was probably about 7 years or so ago. All my seizures up until the last 2 I had, I was completely conscious through. As I’m sure you can imagine, it’s horrible to say the least. Has anyone ever experienced the same thing? And if so, do you know the reason or is it in a certain part of the brain that would make that happen. I just don’t understand why for 20 years every time I had one I was conscious through, except for the last couple. I woke up and the people I was with told me I had had a seizure. Luckily my medication has been working. Thank the lord for modern medicine!!

I'm on lacosamide and a very

I'm on lacosamide and a very strict version of the ketogenic diet now. Last year, I had a grand mal aura (as opposed to the many partial auras I have). For me, facial numbness that spreads down the body, dizziness, and then not long after, lights out. But with the diet, I didn't lose awareness at all with this one. I was 100% conscious for it. Body was quivering like mad but no large convulsions. I failed all the stroke tests when the EMTs arrived and I was rushed to the hospital under the assumption I had had a stroke. My speech became super slurred. I couldn't identify pictures or squeeze my hands or follow a finger with my eyes. Nothing. It was TERRIFYING, like I was trapped in a body. And I actually was thinking "This is it. Game over. I just had a stroke." They did an MRI and didn't find any bleeding in my brain. No abnormal blood work. So, it wasn't a stroke based on that. To this day, I think it was some kind of weird attenuated grand mal. I hope I never have one of those again. But weird things happen, man. And doctors can only explain so much.

Glad to hear your lamictal is

Glad to hear your lamictal is working so good. Just as you haven't had a seizure in 7 years I had a question. I had absence or nocturnal seizures maybe 9months apart. Its always after questioning myself did I take meds corrrectly. Would you say never missing a dose of medicine was highly critical in your 7 years with no seizure? Hope it goes for along time the same for ye!!
