Lamictal and Hair Loss

Tue, 02/01/2005 - 11:33

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced some hair lossor knows of a connection between hair loss and Lamictal? As i recently increased my dosage of Lamictal to 500mg a day, and i'm finding that i'm losing a lot more hair than usual especially when washing it. Any advice anyone can give me would be great!!!

Thanks Robyn.

Hi All,

I was diagnosed with Epilepsy in February of this year. I am currently taking 150mg of Lamictal. I have been experiencing significant hair loss since then. I also stopped taking the pill as I was advised it would not work. So I think a combination of stopping the pill and taking Lamictal has caused the hair loss. Do any of you know if it is safe to use Nourkrin? I have been advised that there are so many alternative medications that you should not take as it may affect my epilepsy, ie Evening Primrose oil etc. Please advise as I am quite anxious about this. Kind regards,Sarah

Hi everyone, I too experience hair loss from Lamictal and other antidepressants. It is mading, I went to the dermatologist and they told me there is nothing they can do. It seems to fall out while takeing a shower. There is something about being in the water that exacterbates the problem. I searched the internet for days for a cure and here is what I found. Your hair loss can be caused by a lack of blood flow to your scalp. I believe that the medication somehow prohibits the blood flow to your scalp. Therefore it may be beneficial to increase the blood flow in the following way. 1st I have an inversion table and I invert myself upside down. In case you don't know what and inversion table is I found a YouTube clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYbT9M6KaO0 Then I massage my scalp, you tube video below http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp_97Dq5GSA I wash my hair in tepid water so as not to open up the pores and allow hair to come out in the shower, and gingerly comb it. I also take Ginkgo Biloba to help increase blood flow. My hair doesn't seem to fall out at any other time but in the shower. This system I developed seems to help. I washed my hair the other day and about 250 hairs fell out. Then in a panic I searched the internet, did the things I mentioned and washed my hait today and about 10 hairs fell out. I am no doctor and I am unsure this will help, but it seems to help me and has worked in the past with other drugs I have taken. I hope this helps, I feel your pain and can relate real time! *The above you tube clips are random and I am unassociated with the people in them

I was on depakote a few years ago, I guess quite a few years... I went through hair loss on that also, I also used nioxin then, and took zinc and a one a day vitamin ( not sure if any of that helped), take zinc w/ food or it will make you throw up.  On the bright side, I never got bals, and it did start coming back and came back as thick as it was before only curly.  That is a side effect of depakote.  Now I am on lamictal and I am going through the hair loss again.  I have been on it for 3 years and was saved last year when I became pregnant  it quit falling out and grew back in... but now I've had my healthy baby and my hair is falling out again. :(   Using nioxin again, taking folic acid and a prenatal... so far it is still falling out...  Lamictal also gives me night sweats...  Good luck w/ your 14 year old, I've had it since I was in 5th grade... I'm now 30... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but it is still a struggle, seems like it should be minor if it controls it.. but hard to cope with... Best wishes for health and hair.  Jen
