Keppra is bad

I've been prescribed 1000mg Keppra to be taken twice daily.

Here are my side effects:

crippling morbid depression, uncontrollable anger and irritability - i have never in my life felt so depressed that i've wanted to kill myself until taking this medication. i've always been pretty upbeat, if a little irritable due to some minor everyday life stress like paying the bills. Now, i need to focus all of my daily attention just to suppress the suicidal thoughts and anger, like i'm a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. My neurologist says it should level off after 4 or5 weeks and then i'll feel "normal". Yeah, as if feeling like i want to die constantly is "normal".

loss of appetite and nausea - i have to force myself to eat because i don't get the urge anymore. if i don't eat, i get headaches from low blood sugar. Before taking the medication, i was a serious foodie, to the point of seriously considering being a chinese restaurant critic. Now, i can't even look at a pb&j sandwich without feeling sick to my stomach. My neurologist says i'm 75 pounds overweight anyway so its good for me to lose some weight. Feh. I'd rather have seizures than lose my love of food.

extreme sleepiness - i'm napping 5-6 hours in the afternoon, as well as sleeping my normal 7-8 hours at night. Tell me how 14 hours of sleep a day can possibly be good for you? My neurologist says not to talk to him about it until i have a sleep study done for sleep apnea. Bogus. I've never needed more than 6-7 hours sleep a night ever in my life until taking this blasted medication.

Those are the 3 major ones. I found that taking a multivitamin with b-supplements helped for about 2 days, then kind of just stopped working.

Anyone else wanna post their Keppra side effects? Maybe after a while, someone will listen.

My 4 year old has been on it

My 4 year old has been on it for a little over a year. His appetite is low and the rage is terrible. He bites, yells, and destroys when a fit hits. If he doesn't do that he'll bang his head against the wall and floor. There's a difference between Keppra rage and a tantrum. He used to be a happy kid now it's walking on eggshells.

I started taking Keppra about

Submitted by Joshua Belyeu on Sun, 2018-04-15 - 10:44
I started taking Keppra about 7 years ago. Around the same time, my thoughts and emotions became obsessively dark and nearly uncontrollable. I remember taking a shower one day, nothing incredibly abnormal going on in my life...and then suddenly, a very perverted thought entered my mind. What freaked me out even more than the thought itself, was I couldn't make it go away. It was disgusting and obscene, but I thought it might be a one-off kind of thing. After all, I had been on Tegretol for epilepsy in the past, and that medication kept me so emotionally locked down I couldn't express anything...so I guess I thought it was a side-effect of the pill switch. Soon however, the negative and dark thoughts returned, growing in their darkness and their obsessiveness every hour of every day. I'd be having a conversation with someone, only for a thought to suddenly enter my mind about either killing or having sex with them...even both. It wasn't just adults, either - these thoughts were about kids, other men, my own family, strangers, and even their pets! But since I knew nothing of Keppra beyond its use for treating epilepsy, I had no reason to suspect it might be the trigger for this whole nightmare. I also started hallucinating like crazy, mainly about snakes since I'm deathly afraid of them. I saw them everywhere, almost so real that I could reach out and touch them. I could almost hear them hissing in my mind, and feel them striking in my thoughts. Its still something I struggle with...all of this crap. The taking of vitamin B-6 didn't do anything for me, so I'll be seeing my neurologist very soon to get this whole thing over and done with. NOTE TO THOSE SUFFERING WITH EPILEPSY - DON'T EVER LET THEM PUT YOU ON KEPPRA! IT WILL COMPLETELY EFF YOU UP!!!

This is my first post here

This is my first post here and I wanted to see if everyone's issues with Keppra are also related to us all using the generic version. We all know our insurance makes us do this and I was at my monthly epilepsy meeting here in Tucson and talking with one lady she mentioned she can only take the non generic as when her insurance forced her to change over she went from 5 years free of seizures to back to continual episodes. She has a great Doc to advocate and basically demand on her behalf but I am wondering if we all take the generic version. I know I do.I still feel we will all have the same side effects but who knows. I have almost all the same symptoms as everyone here to depression, anger and just bad mood or argue with my wife alot more. So not good stuff.I take a ton of this crap. 3000 mg split into 2x a day plus something called Oxcarbazepine that I am up to 1000mg on that as well. But my issues were before the addition of my new med so I dont think its that. While it is very expensive to go non generic or off insurance I plan to take a 1 month supply and get the non generic and just see if there is any difference but I wanted to see if anyone here is actually taking the real stuff. Please chime in

I've done so well on keppra... everybody is different. Just because it didn't work for you, doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. I take 3,750 mg a day and I haven't had any signs of seizure since I started that dosage. It's been absolutely life changing for me, especially since it took two years to be diagnosed with epilepsy, even though I already knew through research. I've been on keppra for 6 months, the dosage mentioned above for 5 months, and as I previously stated, absolutely no sign of seizure. On top of that, it helped my anxiety some too!!

I've been on keppra for a year and a half and im more tired than ever, I recently read that it can cause mood disorders (I have bipolar symptoms) and you're not suppose to give keppra to someone with anxiety and depression (most of my seizures were anxiety attacks so my doctor knew), and I have had 2 major panic attacks in the last 2 months that have caused me to be afraid to move. I mention it to my doctor and he just says "oh you're sensitive to the medication." NO REALLY?! I hate what this medication had made me.

Thank you for taking time to post a comprehensive disclosure of your issues with the med.  My experience is similar but I am concerned about the interaction with cannabis oil, 50mg, daily. I just don't seem to want to do anything.  Procrastinating just makes the likelihood of anxiety a greater risk.  It is a little downward spiral but no deep depression yet.  I am going to add extra cbd oil to the current dose to settle the psychoactive symptoms of the cannabis.

Yea keppra sucks but garuntee working out and losing weight will lower depression.I know because ive lost over 50 pounds twice in my life and i deal with bi polar 1 so i know depression well and know working out helps

Submitted by Gemma H on Sat, 2019-01-19 - 18:50
What I can't quite get my head around is why you haven't asked to change medication? I have Been  on Keppra for 5 1/2 years now and before my neurologist even started me in the drugs we talked through the side effects and he basically grilled me to make sure I hadn't previously been depressed or suicidal and made me acutely aware of the biggest risk with this medication being depression and suicidal thaught and told be to go back asap if I started to feel this way so we could revert me back to my previous medication(epilim). I have had a positive experience on Keppra as on epilim I was very lethargic and had gone from being active and outdoorsy to someone that was always sat watching t. V, as soon as I changed I got my MOJO back and my acne, which I have had all my life(I'm now 34) is actually very well controlled odd breakout when I eat too much bad stuff but basically have clear skin now. I can say when I first changed onto Keppra I was quite agitated at times and found people not doing things on time annoyed me, but I used to get angry easily before I was put onto epilepsy medication and as I was becoming more like my old self again on keppra I decided it was probably that and decided to use my excess energy to chanel into something G productive that calmed my mi d. So I started runningand swimming again, (these activities are like meditation to me.. My mind quietens and I become serene) I now always use self management techniques and focus on things that keep me grounded and on an even keel as a general par for course,

I have a mild case of epilepsy (they call it epilepsy bc no one ,nows why I had a seizure at puberty). I had a normal EEG before being put on Keppra. Now I have to take citalopram to counter act the RAGE, deep depression, and constant anxiety that I have on Keppra alone. I tried to kill myself twice because of the deep depression that Keppra can cause. I have a hard time keeping a job since the sudden mood changes are still there and no one likes that. However, being on citalopram and YEARS of therapy on/off, I've realized that Keppra MAY help my seizures but if I can just be on citalopram, god help me, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Other than the nausea, I could have written this post. I’ve been on Keppra almost a month and I’ve never felt so depressed, or angry, or low energy in my entire life. I never understood people that would commit suicide until I started this medication. Luckily I know these feelings I have aren’t me, it’s the medicine. I can’t wait to see my doctor next week to get off this horrible drug. I’d rather have seizures every day than feel this way.

You've got to start walking.  I really got lucky at work and took a position that has me walking 10-14 miles in a 7-1/2 hour work day.  I lost 30 lbs in 7 months.  I drink a lot more water now and a lot less sweetened drinks.  Walking gets those knees back in shape.  I'm able to do stuff at 60  that I couldn't at 52.  I feel less aggrivated.  I only have to deal with the keppra fog now.

My dad had surgery far as we know he hadnt had a seizure. But did have a brain tumour. Idk but he is up beat talkative after surgery.. felt the beat he every felt. Up walking around he is 76. Then bam all of a sudden he sleeping g all day in out. Appetite gone he was eating well. Idk how a medicine that takes your appetite makes you sleep be very depressed how could it even lead to a good quality of life!!! 76 if u got a good appetite at that age u are up walking moving around being active,, lord how in the world why in the world would u put a active 76 year old n the bed.. take his appetite. He talks about how he misses his son x dead wife. Idk but this just took my daddy's quality of life out from under him.. now idk he is being checked for other sicknesses maybe he got a urnairy infection idk. But this is the only thing that i see that would make drastic changes in him. I'm almost to the point that as poa that I'm gonna tell them to cut his dosage down.. its sad that u let that medecine take people life to the quality of not doing nothing

Submitted by Jonesvillegirl on Mon, 2019-07-01 - 21:26
Last thing you want to do is put a 76-year old man in the bed when you do that he is more likely to develop pneumonia he's also likely to get bedridden and get very weak I'm sure they've got to be other kinds of medicines are they don't have to dose them so high and they gave it to my dad and he's never had seizures as far as I know I knew he was weak and had fell but we don't know anything about us seizure and yes I'm sure it would be a very good seizure medicine or anybody you know but I'm sure they need to adjust the medicine but that is awful especially for a 76 year old you don't want to put them in bed and them to lose all their muscle mass and gain weakness get pneumonia when they're very active medicines are good I agree and we need medicines but sometimes our medicines can the war worse and have worst side effects then the help then it is giving you when it starts taking that quality of life away from you then you have to ask yourself is it really necessary
