how to get the glue out of your hair

Mon, 12/12/2005 - 22:30
As a hairdresser for 20 something years i learned a trick or to. To help you remove the glue from your hair after an E.E.G try this 5 to 7 asprin crushed Half a cup hot water dissolve asprin in water, 2 good size squirts of shampoo, 4 tablespoons whitch hazel or seabreeze mix well all together. Massage thru wet hair and let sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. You can comb thru after alotted time has passed. Rinse and shampoo and condition as usual. Can be repeated if needed. This can also be done once a month to remove traces of medications from your hair.DO NOT NOT GET IN EYES!! and I would not use on childern under 10.

I'm glad I read this.  I am going to have to have an 72 hour EEG done on myself soon and the tech told me that the glue shouldn't bother my hair at all that it should in her words "condition my hair".  Now that I have read this I am starting to wonder about what she said.  :-|

I took this advice yesterday after having the electrodes on for only about 4 hours, but it worked like a charm!! I thought I was going to have to spend the rest of the day scrubbing and picking so thank you!!

Hi to all.  I want to put a couple of theories out there to rest.  First, acetone will not burn the hair.  It is used in many centers/hospitals to remove the glue.  The person that said that the oil-based nail polish remover works too is very accurate.  Acetone based will remove it the fastest, but the smell is bad.  Non-acetone is much easier on the scalp and no smell with it.  Either way, after you have washed it you will have what looks like a bad case of dandruff.  As long as it is up off the scalp, it will wash out.  The witch hazel theory sounds quite extreme and unnecessary.

I want to apologize in advance that some of you were left with excessive amounts of glue in your hair.  I am a neurodiagnostic tech (and also have had seizures myself- had successful left temporal lobe surgery in 2004)  Any tech that allows their patient to leave without making a good attempt to get a majority of the glue out provided you with poor patient care.  I am sorry for that.

I used acetone (nail polish remover) to take the collodion glue out, but the waxy glue came out easily...I just had to wash, rinse, and repeat!

I just got out of the hospital for a 5 day seizure video monitoring stay.

The next day I was to get hooked up for the 48 hours ambilutory monitoring.

It was very, important to get the glue out of my hair the night before since the male tech put way too much in.

The night nurse and I tried all sort of things, then together we decided to try something really stinky since the other suggestions did not work.

I have very thick, course hair due to my thyroid disease and since I coulod not use conditioner it made life difficult finding a solution. And recentlycolored. My beautician said it was too soon to use things like witch hazel becuase I went to a beauty school to get my hair colored and they messed up the firdst day so I had to go back the next daY for them to put on a soap cap and recolor the hair.

Drum roll please, she put mayonaisse on my head and the glue just slid off the hair. After leaving it for about 15 minutes.

I tried it after the 48 hours ambilutory was removed it worked very well. although it did not get out every thing this time-it got out 95% of the again too much glue. I think it would have worked a 100% if I had had someone else do it for me. The nurse that did it the first time made sure to add the mayo thicker were the glue was. I could not do that since I could not see as well as she could.

It is amazing that the hospital did not have glue remover of any kind to get the glue out but the old faithful mayo worked really well for me.

The remaining glue came out with careful combing

It worked really, really well thank you!I have hair to my waist and I had the electrodes glued in for only 24hrs. Here are a few tips to questions I wondered about. Originally when I got home I found the aspirin I purchased was meant to be swallowed whole, I wasn't sure if it would work so I went back and bought more and used a dissolvable type called Aspro Clear (in Australia).  Prior to doing this I brushed argan oil in my hair as a treatment and left for a few hours.I used 7 aspirin and 2 large squirts of anti-dandruff type shampoo along with the Witch Hazel. It fizzed up and overflowed out of the 500ml spray bottle I used and I still had half left when done. My long hair was easily combable and I didn't need conditioner to brush out the glue (I don't know if that was the argan oil or the formula)My biggest tip if you want all the little bits gone from every strand is: You need to use a comb for head lice. My fine tail comb didn't cut it, don't try to think you can get away without one. Also, I recommend trying to keep the glue in big pieces, as I didn't have a nit comb and I was left with tiny gooey bits down the shaft of my hair that definitely would have come out if I'd had one.Overall even without the nit comb I was really happy I saw this post. Coconut oil works great for

Coconut oil works great for my daughter’s curly hair. She has a few EEGs each year and has little patience. Coconut oil, rubbed into the scalp, hair and especially into the globs of glue, then combed out gently with a fine tooth comb. It works well for us!

I am having a 72 hour EEG right now and I am distraught because the nurse covered my head in dozens of layers of tape directlymon my hair. I have thin, fine color treated hair and I am distraught about the same person removing the tape and ripping  my hair out. I see lots of suggestions for glue but what about tape ? Is it normal to completely tape up a person's head directly on hair ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

ANOTHER THING THAT A EEG TECH TOLD ME TO DO WORKS GREAT ON ALSO GETTING RID OF ALL THE KNOTS AFTER A VEEG. TAKE SOME REALLY CHEAP CONDITIONER LIKE VO5 OR SAUVE AND GOB IT ON, WORKING IT IN TO YOU HAIR. TAKE A THICK TOOTHED COMB AND START AT THE ENDS, GENTLY, DOING A SMALL A SECTION OF HAIR AT A TIME, WORK YOUR WAY UP. IF YOU HAVE REALLY THICK, LONG HAIR LIKE ME, I REAPPLY MORE CONDITIONER AS NEEDED. AFTER YOU ARE ABLE TO COMB FROM SCALP TO THE ENDS OF YOUR HAIR COMB IT IT NUMBEROUS TIMES LOSENS THE GLUE AS WELL. THOUGH YOU COULD DO ROOTBEERS THING FOR THE GLUE. WASH YOUR HAIR A COUPLE OF TIMES, AND LIGHTLY CONDITION AND I USUALY COMB MY HAIR MORE TO MAKE SURE ANY MORE LOOSE GLUE COMES OUT AND RINSE.  HOPE THIS HELPS EVERY ONE AFTER VEEGS.

I had a friend of 25 plus years put epoxy on my scalp as she intertwined different strands of my hair and when she pushed or "stapled" my hair to my scalp, the epoxy had made her nails soft and mushy and that's the"staples" in my scalp that have made me very sick for 5 years and continues as I am picking, pulling, and trying thi un twist my hair off my scalp. Very hard patches on my head that looks bald but is actually not bald but epoxy, nails and my hair. I can't get no one to recognize my problem or antibiotics to help with infection. I feel your frustration. Feeling like a "bop it" in Iowa

A PICU nurse told me fabric softener works great to get out the glue.  We have never tried it, I think we will the next time. I always seem to run out around the time we get an EEG.

Witch Hazel, or Sea Breeze helps!  Baby Shampoo helps!   Baby Shampoo has a subtle conditioner in it and a few shampoos will loosen it and eventually all will come out.

Nail Polish Remover is the form of Acetone used in the lab.  It gets out the fastest.  It dries the hair out too.

We can have varieties of oils in the market. Oil can also be use to get rid of glue. It can be use along with tooth brush or fine come. Baby oil is the effective to soften many kinds of gum. As I say varieties of oil like olive oil, cooking oil etc can be used. We can use all type of oily material which can be applied in the hair. Applt oil in your effected part of hair, scrub with light hand. and wait for 15 to 20 minutes. After that shampoo your hair.

I've had 3 VEEGS and also have long hair, what worked for me with success was using a hot oil treatment in the shower and leaving it on for a few minutes.  It worked great!  I only had to do it twice and everything was out. Good luck.  Mary Beth

Estreit,

thank you for your comments!  Here! Here!  If a Registered Neurodiagnostic Tech. removes it, the patient should not have a complaint!  I was one for 15 years!

I also have had surgery.  I have had 2 surgeries and a VNS.

Your suggestions I back you up on!

Thanks!

I had a 3 day study done, so this stuff was really on there...(sores broke out for some reason)& my hair is thick. When I got home I was in tears, I thought I would NEVER get it out!! Having a loving husband :) & daughter :) that put conditioner on the sites, wrapped my head in a towel for a while & washed. Some came out, but not much, so we sprayed Ausy 3 minute Miracle Detangler, re-applied the conditioner & worked on it with a small toothed-comb. Kind of like you would if it were Lice. I heard Mayo works, too, but I didn't want to try it unless I REALLY had to!! Good luck!

You don't want to use nail polish remover, that's got acetone in it, you'll burn up your hair!! When I had my ambulatory EEG done they used stuff that was LIKE nail polish remover (smelled like it) but didn't have the acetone in it . . . did a great job at getting the glue out but left my hair feeling real oily . . . . so of course, right away I went home and took a shower!! I know this is an older subject, but maybe it can help someone else with the glue in hair problem:  I just got glue out of my husbands hair and only used MINERAL OIL.....just rubbed in a small amount in the area and just worked it in with my fingers, the glue fell off the hair stands as I was trying to separate the strands of hair, it didn't pull his hair or hurt him, (he's a big baby).  LOL

Also, it might depend on what kind of glue that is in the hair.

You can get witch hazel or sea breeze at any drug store or walmart or target. They are both Face and body astrngents. They carry them in the place that has soaps and face cleaners (like oil of olay and such) This should still work for you even though the glue is matted you might have to leave it in for a longer time and repeat agian after you wash your hair. If you can get someone to help you They can carefully comb the mixture thru your hair working out the hunks of glue (it is best to start combing from the ends and work your way up to the scalp. Once the glue is loosed and working its self out then you can recomb from the scalp to the ends. Be sure if combing to work in small sections. Best of luck to you.

girl I did not know that you were a hairdresser too!!! It is funny how we come up with things that work so well (that you would never think to put on your hair LOL) For the kids version of that I always use instead of shampoo dish washing liquid (dawn is the best) mixed with a little bit of seabreeze, and a little baking soda mix it till it gets thick and then I put it on the glue itself with a old toothbrush and gently scrub (my 4 year old feel asleep while I was doing it so not hard at all)let set for a few minutes (10-15) and lather shampoo and rinse...you will definetly need conditioner after that but it works great for glue, it also works great for too dark of haircolor and just a really good deep cleaning of scalp and hair.. I am going to have to try the aspirin one I bet it works great :o) if you are going to use this on children apply with toothbrush only on glue spots themselves as to keep it out of there eyes....
