Epilepsy and Demonic Possession...or something of the sort

Tue, 06/24/2008 - 16:43

Has anyone had problems with religious family members whipping out Mark 9 (the chapter where Jesus heals a boy who apparently is having seizures of some sort), then declaring that you must have demons in you, or you have spiritual unrest, or are somehow "not right" with God?

My father did that to me recently. When he started talking about it, I was afraid he was going to try an exorcism on me right then and there. But he didn't - he just prayed. Ever since then he's been pushing me to talk to my minister about my alleged spiritual unrest. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do that - soon we'll have a new minister and I can just see me going in on his first day on the job and saying, "O hi, sometimes I wake up at night with a yell and then I shake. Can you help me? I must not be right with God."  The poor minister would probably put a request in for a transfer that same day.

I mean, I do have Demons. I really do. And I have Crime and Punishment and The Idiot and Brothers Karamazov and most of Dostoevsky's works. (Sorry - had to get a book nerd joke in there.)

Seriously, I thank this very same Deity (with whom I am supposedly not right) that I'm an adult and live a few states away from my father. But this still bothers me because I have to deal with my father's pestering me to talk to the minister. Truly, I think it goes beyond just a religious matter and it's more a question of my father's sanity.

So has anyone else dealt with this demons issue?

When my Dad was in school to be a minister he had a friend who was also in school for ministry. He had epilepsy and with it fear that he would have seizures while he was speaking or ministering in front of people. While they were in the cafeteria one day, he went into a Grand Mal seizure and was on the floor. The Lord led my dad to speak to the deaf and dumb spirit and command the demons to get out. They left along with the seizure never to return again. I have a friend whose mom suffers from epilepsy (and is a christian) and one day she forgot to take her medicine. She felt herself start to slip and immediately my spirit sensed the presence of another spirit. I felt empowered to tell it to get away from her and after that she was fine. I pray that the Lord frees her completely. I do believe that in many cases epilepsy is caused by a deaf and dumb spirit assigned to torment a person. From reading the comments it seems like people are thinking of this more as Demon Possession rather than what it really is...torture by demons. 1. People are tormented and encounter demons on a daily basis. Christians and non-christians alike. To be honest I have dealt with spirits of depression that led me to think suicidal thoughts when I was younger and a christian. Demon's are speaking into people's minds all the time. Why? Because they HATE our guts and want to destroy us. "The enemy comes to steal kill and destroy but I come that you may have life, and have it more abundantly." 2. Because you are tormented by demons doesn't mean God is angry at you or punishing you. I have been tormented by demons and actually have participated in tormenting others through my words through a demon that bothers my friend all this while I was in close relationship with God. (There are times when I wax and wane depending on how stubborn I get) Though I am not controlled by demons (which is what people might call demon possession) there have been various times in my life where I have recognized the influence of the demonic all this while I was a following Jesus. There is a world of difference between "attacked and tormented by" and "controlled by" demons. All this to say, the idea that epilepsy is caused by a demon spirit should never make anyone feel put to shame. That is what the religious leaders whom Jesus confronted like to put on people. Read the story in John 9 - a classic example of Jesus blasting the religious thinking that sickness is always caused by sin. (Though in some cases it can be according to another story) 1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I[a] must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” God obviously allows pain and torment of demons into the world and it is the responsibility of those who follow Him to lean on His power to fight off the demons that torment people all the time, and bring them into spiritual freedom. Mark 16:5 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Whether you believe epilepsy is a sickness or a demon, the ability for you to be free (aside from medical treatment) is highly dependent on how the people of God respond to this and obey- i.e. don't blame God, blame the christians (haha) As our faith grows for this, then the Lord will be able to work. (Did you know that there were certain cities where Jesus couldn't heal people because there was so much unbelief in God) It is us who limit God's ability to heal us because of our unbelief. :-( 3. The Lord wants us free from torment, He Loves us and hates what the enemy does to all those who are tormented by evil spirits. The sad thing is that right now the people who God endeavors to use to set people free from the power of His enemy are stuck in unbelief of the power that God has over epilepsy. I pray Lord that you change that and set the people who are suffering free by Your awesome power. I am angry that Christians have been so ignorant as to blame the victims. I pray for all of you who suffer from this, that the Lord will free you completely. If you read the biblical story in Mark, these demons are strong and difficult to cast out. A person that could deal with this spiritually would need lots of spiritual power and faith given by the Holy Spirit. Even the disciples who worked as a team could not cast it out. I pray that the Lord will give the spiritual power and wisdom to His people so they will be able to give people freedom from this. In my understanding of Scriptures it seems pretty obvious that people who burned epileptics at the stake were the ones being controlled by demons not the ones with epilepsy. Their demons were of a "religious" sort. Those are the most dangerous. I realize this is like 2 year later. But for your and anyone's situation I would say, not just anyone can deal with a spirit like this. Jesus said that "this type can only come out by prayer and fasting" because of its strength. You might want to remain open to this possibility and pray for God to show You what is going on in your heart in His timing. That might calm your dad down too. Anyone who prays for you should get your full permission. You should not be prayed for by people who do not ask for permission.

Hi Dansey, I like to think of many of my seizures as my visits to "A Midsummer Nigh't Dream," or anyways that's what Oberon tells me, so that I may be a more careful Puck. But, Epilepsy is even more mischievous than I am under the Gods' influence, so when I see what fools those mere mortals be, the question should Oberon be respected counter to the reality he knows and created, as all Gods do, is answered for itself. Miracles amongst those mere mortals are often frustrating with predestination and the nonsense of free will and chance, so I will simply quote with what snippet is there of B.F. Skinner's "Particulars of My Life" on page 227, and St. Peter's alleged irritation with miracles just like mine, at least when I carelessly let my God-Guard down. Tadzio
