Food-Triggered Siezures

Sun, 05/18/2008 - 14:10
So I have never found a trigger my siezures beyond them occuring around my period...but I think I might be on to something. Maybe even something that might give me the origin to my seizures- since they haven't found anything on my CT scans or MRI. I went out for Thai food this week and last to a specific place. I had a small siezure right after eating both times. The first time I didn't think much of it since I was on my period, but it was my only one that week (odd, I didn't have more that cycle) but the second time I looked at my plate suspiciously. I had crab rangoon both times, but I had it once before at this place and didn't react so *scratch*... However, I recalled the number of times in the past four years that my seziues began at the dinner table. Some of my worst ones began at the dinner table. Could I have an allergy to something? Why would I not be reacting to it more often outside the time of my period? Some minor research does pull up that allergies are stronger during menstration. Could I be more predisposed to a reaction then when my seizure threshhold is lower as is? I'm going to have to keep track of what I eat now. Does anyone else have anything similar to this, or heard of it? Is it a possibility?

Anything with the sweetener SORBITOL in it almost kills me at the smallest dose.  (Seizures, Vomiting, and things I won't mention)  I had no idea they have been slipping it into so many over-the-counter medicines recently.  Not to mention mints, chewing gum, ice cream, soda...

I will direct all of you to www.epilepsymom.com

I found this woman's site after I realized and I stress, I , b/c when I talked to a allergiest he told me he's never seen anyone have a seizure due to a food allergy. I disagreed, found evidence on the Internet, told him a list of what I thought my son was allergic to (kept a food diary) told him I didn't want skin tests, only RAST b/c some people won't react for days, as was the case with my son. It could take 2-4 days for a reaction/seizure. Just over the past 3 mos. I have found two other kids who have seizures who allergic to milk. Anyhow, The things I thought my son was allergic to, he was and I got to say, "I told you so!" to his previous allergist as I now have one who worked with me to test for a good range of food, developed a diet to try (allergen free) and my son has been seizure free for nearly 6 months now!

He is on two meds: depakote and Topomax (weaning currently). Previously was on Keppra too, but is off that.

I STRONGLY URGE anyone with seizures to get RAST testing!! There's AGE and AGG tests, do both if you have to. Beg, plee with your Dr., make up symptoms if you have to and DO NOT do the skin tests. They will tell you blood tests aren't as reliable, BULL! Request RAST and even if they tell you it's not an allergy when you get your results back, don't eat that food, for awhile at least.

I got no where relying only on the Dr. I took matters into my own hands and it has paid off...two fold!

Good luck and even if you're not a mom of a child with epilepsy, still visit www.epilepsymoms.com. There's SO much info that I had to realized and find out on my own.
