Seizure Forecasting Survey

The Epilepsy Foundation is conducting a research survey focused on seizure forecasting. The concept of a seizure forecast is the idea that just like weather forecasting, seizure forecasting could tell you the chance of a seizure in a given time frame. Understanding that chance could allow you to prepare just in case. For example, a high chance of rain doesn’t mean it will rain that day, but you might bring an umbrella around with you. We want to understand how forecasting for seizures could impact your day to day. which will help us ensure future devices created to predict the chance of a seizure meet the needs of our community.

As we look to the future of seizure forecasting devices, we want your opinion about what device would work for you. Specifically, we want to know about your experiences with seizures, your input on seizure forecasting, and your opinion about whether a seizure forecasting device would be meaningful to you. Findings from this survey will influence future research and development of a seizure forecasting device.

In 2019, the Epilepsy Innovation Institute (EI²) launched a new initiative known as the My Seizure Gauge Challenge. This challenge was designed to encourage researchers to build a minimally invasive seizure forecasting device in 3 years. Now in its final year, the My Seizure Gauge Challenge is hosting a data sharing platform for algorithm developers interested in seizure detection and forecasting on www.epilepsyecosystem.org to look at and find ways to forecast seizures from measurements from devices like a Fitbit.

Who is eligible to take the survey?

People at least 18 years of age who are either

• Living with epilepsy
• Primary caregivers
• Family members

How long will it take?

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete.

What happens with the data?

• All information obtained from this survey will be presented in summary form, grouped with other responses so that no one individual can be identified.
• Your answers will be kept in the strictest confidence and will be accessible only to people working on this study.
• Aggregated results of the survey may be published as a research study to provide insights from our community for those working on devices designed to forecast seizures.
