Epilepsy News From: Tuesday, March 03, 2020

Valtoco diazepam nasal spray

Valtoco®, a rescue medicine that delivers diazepam through the nose, was approved earlier this year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is available in pharmacies now.

  • Valtoco is prescribed to help stop periods of increased seizures or seizure clusters. These may also be called acute repetitive seizures or bouts of seizures.
  • It can be use in adults and children age 6 years and older.
  • It is easy to give with a squirt into the nose and will be a good alternative to rectal medicine.
  • People who are not medical providers can give this outside of a hospital setting, as long as they are trained in its use.

Valtoco is now available through Maxor Specialty Pharmacy. Prescribing health care providers can send prescriptions to Maxor. This pharmacy will then contact the person with epilepsy to confirm insurance and other information, before delivering Valtoco to them. In coming months, Valtoco will be available in local retail pharmacies.
