Understanding your diagnosis is critical to having good communication with your medical team and working towards your goal of seizure freedom. Building your epilepsy knowledge ensures you are able to participate in making decisions about the way your seizures are treated and may help you lower risks associated with seizures.

- Understand the results of your evaluation and your diagnosis of epilepsy
- Be able to explain to others what types of seizures you have
- Educate the people around you about the best way to respond if you have a seizure
- Manage your medications and your schedule to ensure you are regular and reliable with your treatments and your medical appointments
- Implement behavior changes necessary to avoid triggers for your seizures
- Know when to request referral to an epilepsy specialist at an epilepsy center
