Community Corner: Do You Need Help Learning How to Manage Your Epilepsy?

Epilepsy News From: Tuesday, June 19, 2018

Knowing how to manage your epilepsy is key to getting the right care and living your life the best you can. Doing this involves gaining knowledge, learning skills, and having resources and support. Essentially, this is what epilepsy self-management (SM) is all about. Sometimes people may not get this kind of help at their doctor's office or don't have time during appointments. They may not have access to the internet to get to online resources or don't know how to navigate the resources available.

The PAUSE to Learn Your Epilepsy is testing the effect of personalized epilepsy SM education using mobile technology on improving the lives of adult people with epilepsy from underserved populations. The study is trying to see if this approach can help people coming from a community group, such as the Epilepsy Foundation, as well as from doctors and nurses in an epilepsy/neurology clinic.

PAUSE: To Learn Your Epilepsy

PAUSE stands for Personalized Internet Assisted Underserved Self-Management of Epilepsy.

People interested in the study will first:

  • Identify what they would like to learn about epilepsy and self-management
  • Have a telephone interview with a member of the PAUSE research team

If they decide to join the study, people will:

  • Get free access to an internet-connected tablet device to use the information on epilepsy.com with real-time video-conference support from a health educator during the study.
  • Complete questionnaires before the study, after completing the personalized SM education, and 3 months, 6 months, and a year later.

To learn more about the PAUSE study and how you can join:

The PAUSE study research team is located at the University of Illinois Chicago and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
